Course context for academic year 2024-25
This subject allows students to come into contact with the cultural foundations of British society and study the most important figures of literature. The subject is devoted to the study of English literature from the end of the 19th century to the present day, as well as the critical analysis of literary discourse and specific texts corresponding to that time. This includes studying the periods and main features of British literature located inside the historical, social, economic, political and cultural context in which it appears as well as looking at its development and offering a critical appraisal of the characteristics of specific literary discourses.

- CE2 : Understand History and the major artistic and philosophical currents of Mankind, particularly the classical foundations on which European cultural reality is based, and be able to transmit them by promoting the social value of culture.
- CE3 : Master one or more foreign languages to facilitate access to the production and interpretation of cultures in their diverse expressions, especially contemporary culture, cultural diversity and its management.
- CE5 : Assess and interpret the cultural diversity of the Region of Valencia, contrasting the indigenous cultures of the region with other cultures with which relations and contacts are established, using the official languages as the vehicles for interaction.
- CE7 : Make creative entrepreneurial use of the basic principles of the public and private organisation and management of ICTs to evaluate, create and carry out cultural dissemination projects.
- CE8 : Acquire skills to prepare and display content related to the human and social sciences for dissemination and for educating secondary school children, using personal skills and ICT.

- CG1 : Capacity to master the key theories, perspectives and conceptualisations for constructing the theoretical framework of linguistic and literary disciplines applied to Catalan language and literature as an expert on the subject and in different professional profiles.
- CG2 : Capacity to understand the role of language in the construction of human beings as active members of a linguistic and cultural community and relate this to the function of individuals in society.

Specific Competences (CE)
- CE11 : Be able to develop reading, analysis and synthesis techniques, formulate working hypotheses, demonstrate them with arguments and reach conclusions, as well as recognise and ensure the textual coherence (structure of the text, organisation of ideas, progression of information, use of keywords), to explain and argue any subject related to Catalan language and literature, thus achieving the role of expert, transmitter and adviser regarding the knowledge acquired.
- CE7 : Capacity to understand the historical trends of literature in the Catalan language and its context, to define the evolution of literary thinking in the Catalan language and its social impact.
- CE8 : Capacity to understand the different epochs, movements, models and values described in Catalan literature, as well as the traditions in which they are set, the specific textual resources used, paying special attention to the comparative study of common and different elements, within the same or between different literary contexts.
- CE9 : Capacity to identify the currents of literary criticism, their categories, concepts and nomenclature as a key factor in the development of the capacity to criticise and analyse text (literary, cinematographic, advertising), as regards the creative manifestation and reflection of the sociocultural context.

- CE11 : Capacity to use pertinent resources and materials: bibliographic repertories, reference works and the new ICTs as an autonomous learner able to control the learning process and progress independently in it.
- CE14 : Capacity to interpret and analyse the main stages, movements, writers and works of the Literature of a second language.
- CE6 : Capacity to analyse and criticise literary texts as a creative manifestation and reflection of the sociocultural context.

AIMS
1 To determine the basic concepts that form the subject of English literature referring to the period that goes from late 19th century to the present day, and the mutual relations between these, as well as building complex units of thought from independent ideas, based on their common traits.
2 To distinguish periods in the development of English literature from the end of the 19th century to the present day; to locate authors and specific works, and define the main characteristics of these, as well as to characterize the different aesthetic trends that emerge.
3 To understand the social, economic, political and cultural characteristics of Great Britain in the period that goes from late 19th century to the present, and relate them to specific authors, works and trends.
4 To encourage engagement with a significant range of literary genres in the English language from the Victorian period to the present and familiarize students with the methods and techniques of literary analysis.
5 To sustain/enhance a body of knowledge about, and critical appreciation of, literature through critical and analytical thinking and to discuss specific works, or fragments corresponding to the given period.
SPECIFIC AIMS:
- To reinforce previously acquired active and passive knowledge of the English language through reading and critical interpretation of literary texts, and the supervised preparation of specific tasks.
- To recognize and familiarize students with literature in English language through a canon of authors that reflect the diverse and international character of this literature.
- To learn about a variety of literary genres.
- To learn the basic concepts related to the social, economic, political and cultural characteristics of Great Britain in the period studied and relate them to authors, works and specific trends.
- To be able to identify the general characteristics of the evolution and history of English literature from the end of the 19th century to the present day.
