Course context for academic year 2024-25
The subject Contemporary Arabic Texts, taught in the second term of the second year of the Degree, aims to deepen the knowledge of Arabic language and literature through the analysis of relevant literary texts from a formal, pragmatic and generic perspective. The course will build on and complement the knowledge acquired and skills developed in the first two years of the degree, particularly in the subjects of Arabic Language, Maghrebi Arabic Dialect and Arabic Literature: Contemporary Period. The texts will be studied in their original language (Arabic) and/or in Spanish, depending on their difficulty and length, with emphasis on the grammatical aspects of the Arabic language.

Specific Competences (CE)
- CE1 : Understand the key theories of the disciplines associated with Arab and Islamic Studies and apply them in practice to be able to operate appropriately in the different professional profiles accessible through the degree qualification or undertake further studies with a high level of autonomy.
- CE10 : Understand the original space of Islam, its expansion and the basic points of reference regarding religion and historical and social evolution in Islamic and its host societies, to understand and interpret the different cultural, literary, artistic and philosophical materials produced by Islamic culture.
- CE11 : Interpret the social and political history of the Arab world to understand and interpret the role of social and political phenomena in the construction of classical and contemporary thinking.
- CE5 : Capacity to interpret, produce and develop academic descriptions and arguments and/or technical reports related to the professional contexts that can be accessed with the degree qualification.
- CE7 : Understand the characteristics and evolution of literature in the Arabic language to understand the role of its manifestations in building classical and contemporary literary thinking and assess its impact on the Arab social context and its relationship with other literatures.
- CE8 : Identify literary currents, their categories, concepts and nomenclature as a tool to analyse and criticise literary texts in Arabic.
- CE9 : Analyse and interpret historical, geographical, religious and scientific texts and discourses in Arabic, using appropriate techniques for analysis.
Transversal Competences
- CGUA1 : Be able to communicate in a foreign language other than Arabic in one's discipline.
- CGUA2 : Be able to use basic ICT tools at user level.
- CGUA3 : Be able to express oneself correctly in one of the two official languages of the Region of Valencia, in the context of one's discipline.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
4.1. General objectives
1. To deepen the knowledge of contemporary Arabic literary texts, in their original language and through translations.
2. To provide the student with the methodological knowledge necessary for the study of contemporary Arabic literary texts.
3. To enable students to interpret and analyse Arabic literary texts of the period on the basis of their main rhetorical, stylistic and referential features.
4. To introduce the student to the bibliographical information tools necessary for the study of contemporary Arabic literature.
5. To encourage students' ability to search for and synthesise information with respect to the contents of the subject.
6. To encourage students' critical reasoning with respect to the bibliography, the materials and the methodology observed for the subject as a whole.
7. To deepen students' knowledge and understanding of the Arabic language.
4.2. Specific objectives
Conceptual
1. Know the main genres and themes of contemporary Arabic literature, as well as their evolution.
2. Know Arabic grammar to the extent necessary to understand the texts.
3. Know the basic tools for the analysis and translation of contemporary Arabic texts.
Procedural
1. Analyse contemporary Arabic literary texts in terms of their form and message.
2. Relate contemporary Arabic literary texts to the historical, political, social, cultural and geographical environment in which they have been produced.
3. Distinguish and identify the different genres of contemporary Arabic literature.
4. Recognise the literary currents or trends to which contemporary Arabic texts are related.
5. Search for, sort and synthesise information on contemporary Arabic literature and its critical interpretation.
6. Recognise the relationships between contemporary Arabic literature and other literary traditions.
7. Put into practice the basic tools of literary translation in selected fragments.
8. Present orally or in writing arguments of personal evaluation on the texts under study.
Attitudinal
1. Show a reflective and non-exclusionary critical spirit with respect to the cultural, social and political paradigms of Arab civilisation as represented in its literature.
2. Consider personal values and attitudes towards the Arab world in general, taking into account an open and comprehensive view of the realities reflected in literary texts.
3. Develop the habit of reading texts and works of contemporary Arabic literature through translations and the original texts.
4. To develop an interest in knowledge of the world through literature, and in understanding it through knowledge of the world.
