Course context for academic year 2024-25
El Grado de Medicina tiene como objetivo formar a profesionales con competencias relacionadas con: 1. Valores profesionales, actitudes, comportamientos y ética. 2. Fundamentos científicos de la Medicina. 3. Habilidades clínicas. 4. Habilidades de comunicación. 5. Salud pública y sistemas de salud. 6. Manejo de la información. 6. Análisis crítico e investigación.
La epidemiología es una disciplina de la medicina dentro del área de la salud pública que tiene relación directa o indirecta con la mayoría de las competencias médicas, al estar centrada en estudiar la frecuencia y distribución de las enfermedades y problemas de salud en los individuos y poblaciones según las características de las personas, el lugar y el tiempo; y estudiar los factores que influyen o determinan su distribución con el fin de contribuir a prevenir y controlar las enfermedades, promocionar y proteger la salud, y a la mejores prácticas profesionales en el ámbito de la atención sanitaria.
La epidemiología tiene una diversidad de campos de trabajo. Además de la epidemiología clínica, centrada en las enfermedades infecciosas y crónicas, los conocimientos de la epidemiología se aplican a múltiples campos; como la epidemiología genética, la epidemiología ambiental, la epidemiología social y política, …).
La asignatura de epidemiología se compone de temas eminentemente de carácter metodológico para entender el método epidemiológico que es necesario en el ámbito de las ciencias médicas, e imprescindible en el de la salud pública; y aunque se trata de una asignatura en la que el cálculo está muy presente, el interés básico está en la comprensión de los conceptos y en su interpretación. Se trabaja para ello, dentro del marco de las competencias generales y transversales establecidas en la Memoria del Grado de Medicina de la Universidad de Alicante, y siguiendo las competencias específicas CE2-05, CE2-06, CE2-09, CE2-11, CE2-13, CE2-15, CE2-16.

- CE2.05 : Knowing how to assess the risk factors and prevention of the disease. Recognize the determinants of population health. Sanitary indicators. Know the systems of planning, programming and evaluation of health programs. Understand the actions in the prevention and protection against diseases, injuries and accidents. Know how to evaluate the quality of care and patient safety strategies. Know the importance of vaccinations. Understand the general concepts in epidemiology and demography. Learn about health planning and administration at a global, European, Spanish and regional level. Know the economic and social implications of medical action, considering criteria of effectiveness and efficiency. Know the strategies in health and environment, food safety and occupational health.

- CE2.16 : Carry out a public presentation, oral and written, of scientific papers and/or professional reports.
Learning outcomes (Training objectives)
This subject will enable students to understand and recognise the causative agents and risk factors that determine health states and the development of disease. They will also know how to use sources of health information. They will also develop a critical, creative, constructively sceptical and research-oriented point of view during their professional activity, as well as understand the importance and methodological limitations in the prevention and management of diseases.
