Competencies and objectives

Course context for academic year 2024-25

Statistical mechanics is one of the topics that is the basis of modern physics. The course on Statistical Mechanics has as its main objective to introduce the student to the treatment, through statistical methods, of many-particle systems and the fluctuations that are produced, connecting the microscopic description with macroscopic observables. In this course we will revise concepts already studied in the second year, particularly Thermodynamics, in this case starting from a microscopic description to obtain the macroscopic variables. This course is related to others in the same year, such as Quantum Mechanics I and II, as well as courses from the fourth year, such as Solid State Physics and Computational Physics. It makes use of concepts studied previously in mechanics as well as mathematical and numerical methods. The course has a theory part and resolution of problems, in some cases with computational methods. Moreover, applications in the laboratory related to the topics of this course will be included in Experimental Techniques II.
