Competencies and objectives

Course context for academic year 2024-25

Photonics is the science and technology of generating, controlling and detecting photons. Both light waves and photons are the basis of the technologies based on light, which allow the development of daily and sustainable life. Photonics is essential to continue the advances already achieved in medicine, energy, information, communication, agriculture, industry, astronomy, architecture, leisure, art and culture, increasing the health and well-being of society.

This subject requires the contents and concepts of the Optics I and Optics II subjects, and it will address aspects related to optical communications: operation and characteristics of optical fibers, study of emission systems and light detection; holography: recording and reconstruction of a hologram; and imaging techniques: basic methods of image capture and processing.
