Competencies and objectives

Course context for academic year 2024-25

The course will provide students with the assimilation of methods and strategies for solving problems related to thermodynamics, general mechanics, electric field, electric current and semiconductors. The last two points will be deeper studied en other subjects of the degree. The skills taught will allow the students to know and assimilate the concepts related to Engineering in general, and particularly to Telecommunication Engineering.

The course consists of different activities: theoretical lectures, exercise lectures and laboratory experiences. For a successful achievement of the objectives of the course, students will have to work individually or in groups in every one of the activities.

The theoretical lectures and the exercise lectures will take place in the classroom and laboratory experiences will take place in the Physics Laboratory on the first floor of EPS I.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2024-25

  • Skills in basic scientific literacy and technology, which permit the students to learn new methods and displays, to give they the possibility to adapt they selves for wide range of situations.
  • Acquire an overview of the fundamentals of the physics of semiconductors, which are necessary to successfully address the subjects of electronics and photonics that will be studied in the degree.
  • Assimilate the basic concepts of mechanics of a particle to solve problems of kinematics, dynamics and work and energy, as well as problems involving situations in which these concepts appear simultaneously.
  • Acquire basic knowledge of heat, temperature and thermodynamics and apply them to solve problems in which heat and mechanisms of transfer of thermal energy appear.
  • Understanding the basics about electrical electric fields and currents, both of great importance in Telecommunications Engineering and essential for the study of other subjects, and know how to apply these concepts to problem solving with specific electrical loads and distributed.
  • Capacity to solve questions with initiative, take decisions, creativity, and to communicate and transfer knowledge, concepts, skills, understanding the ethical and professional responsibility of the engineering’s work.
  • Encourage students by exposing applications of physics in everyday life, in today's technology, in its own degree and in their future professional activity.
