Competencies and objectives

Course context for academic year 2023-24

It is intended that students coming from high school acquire a basic terminology in Chemistry, which allows them to express themselves with the precision required in the field of Science, formulating ideas, concepts and relationships between them, and being able to reason in scientific terms, relating the basics of Chemistry with Biology and Marine Sciences. The students must acquire the operative capacity to apply and relate the chemical-physical laws and principles of biology, as well as to master the necessary procedures for the resolution of chemical problems, interpreting the results and discussing if these are reasonable. Students should know the structure and function of molecules and understand the principles of thermodynamics to later extend this knowledge to the study of biomolecules and their function, as well as their application to bioenergetics. In this course, students must acquire the necessary skills to perform in a chemistry laboratory, including the realization of experimental setups, obtaining measurements, results and their interpretation in terms of physical laws, safely handling laboratory material, reagents, instruments and application devices. Finally, students are expected to be able to study and plan their activities for learning, either individually or in groups, searching, selecting and synthesizing information in different bibliographic sources.
