Course context for academic year 2023-24

This course aims at giving an overview about what the sound is and how it is managed by means of computers from a technical point of view. It is not a course on software tools for carry out tasks related to this field, but to know the theoretical and practical bases of those systems, to be able perform these tasks with a solid base.

The subject is about the sound in general and music as a particular case. This is a very broad and interdisciplinary area that spans from Physics to programming languages. Teaching is a complex because it handles from concepts of very different fields, such as acoustics, music theory, digital signal processing, programming and computers technology.

Historically, the areas of work in which music has taken advantage of the processing capacity of the computers have had to do with tasks such as recording, reproduction, processing, synthesis or the control of musical devices.

In this context, this course studies the perception of sound, in terms of what physical and mathematical parameters can describe sound sensations that causes. We also study the methods for the storage, processing and digital sound generation. The theory is complemented by practical works at the lab that will be carried out related to all these aspects of music and sound. Individual works are the learning basis of this course.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2023-24

  • Know the relationship between the objective perceptual features of sounds and the magnitudes that originate them, so that students can both describe and how to specify the sounds in terms of these characteristics.
  • Know the theoretical bases and practices underlying the sound synthesis and editing programs, as well as tools for the management of computerized representations of music.
  • Know the standards for computerized control of musical devices.
  • Understand the basics of traditional and computer musical representations, to be able to work in cooperation with musicians, technicians, and sound designers in the field of multimedia digital production.
