Competencies and objectives

Course context for academic year 2021-22

The main objective of this subject is to provide students with general knowledge about the restoration of artificial slopes. It will include a theoretical view on vegetation and erosion dynamics in these environments, and a practical view on the management of real restoration projects. Students will obtain basic knowledge to work for consulting and engineering ompanies dealing with quarriy or slope restoration.

Within the context of the M.Sc., this subject provides a practical framework for the application of more theoretical concepts learned in other subjects such as "Environmental Legislation", "Desertification. Evaluation and Mitigation","Restoration of arid areas" and "Nursery production and management of plant material for restoration".

Learning outcomes (Training objectives)
• Analyze the problems associated with open-pit mining in an integrated manner.
• Acquire basic knowledge for the improvement of the geotectonic stability of the slopes, as well as its plant recolonization and the increase in the services provided by these anthropized ecosystems.
• Obtain basic knowledge for the design of slopes in linear works and in quarry terraces.
• Learn the techniques of restoration of slopes and quarries.
• Develop skills for group and individual work.
• Develop critical thinking about restoration projects, and learn the fundamental variables affecting these projects.

Specific objectives
• Understand the importance and extent of slopes and quarries.
• Learn different alternatives for ecological restoration, and evaluate when it can be recommended.
• Learn the fundamental ecological processes involved in the restoration of quarries and slopes, and the most common problems and limitations.
• Obtain a general and critical overview of different restoration tools available.
• Learn the phases of a restoration project, and the methodologies to evaluate success.
• Visit slopes and restored quarries, and interact with experts.
