Competencies and objectives

Course context for academic year 2018-19

Scientific advances recently introduced in eye correction techniques require the introduction of new concepts and techniques for the study of ocular surfaces and retinal image quality.

The lectures will cover the following contents: measurement and and analysis of the wavefront, theory and practical use of image quality measuring instruments and data and image processing in order to obtain relevant optical parameters and objective criteria describing the optical performance of the human eye.

After completing the course the student will be prepared to use experimental systems for measuring ocular aberrations, ocular biometry, understand optical properties of the cornea and the crystalline lens as well as to simulate the retinal image and calculate image quality metrics.

Additionally, and in order to improve the skills and employability of students in an international context , the subject will be taught in English.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2018-19

Scientific advances made ¿¿in recent years in the correction of ametropies  require the introduction of new concepts and techniques for the study of ocular surface and retinal image.

The course will build upon the following contents:

Measurement and analysis of the optical wavefront. Knowledge and use of instruments for direct and indirect measurements, taking into account both the image acquisition and processing steps. Relationship between aberrometry and refractive ametropia. Ocular quality metrics.

After completing the course, students will be able to understand the basis of experimental systems for measuring ocular aberrations, ocular biometry, optical properties of the cornea and lens as well as simulate the retinal image and calculate metrics about image quality.

Additionally, in order to improve the skills and employability of students in an international environment, the subject will be taught  in English
