Course context for academic year 2017-18

The TFM is a research dissertation the aim of which is to initiate cutting-edge research within Applied Linguistics. and related disciplines, such as Computational Linguistics, Forensic Linguistics, Communications in the professions, Teaching Languages for Specific Purposes, and Information and Communication Technologies. The Master's dissertation can be supervised by one or more members of the Faculty.

Specific Competences (CE)

  • CE34 : Ability to identify linguistic or interdisciplinary research problems related to some variety of IFE.
  • CE35 : Ability to identify linguistic or interdisciplinary research problems related to some variety of EFE.
  • CE36 : Ability to apply linguistic knowledge to researching some aspect related to the languages of the speciality (English and Spanish).
  • CE37 : Ability to apply the knowledge acquired of ICTs to research into aspects related to the languages of the speciality (English and Spanish).
  • CE38 : Ability to create an analysis model suitable for researching aspects related to the languages of the speciality (English and Spanish).
  • CE39 : Ability to prepare and write research work in the field of linguistics applied to languages dealt with in the speciality (English and Spanish).

 

General Competences of the Degree Course:>>Instrumental: Procedural or Methodological

  • CG3 : Ability to apply the knowledge acquired and solve problems in new or little-known settings within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to the languages of one's speciality.
  • CG4 : Know how to integrate knowledge and deal with the complexity of giving opinions on the basis of information that may be incomplete or limited and includes reflections on the social and ethical responsibilities associated with applying one's knowledge and opinions in academic and research contexts.
  • CG5 : Possess the ability for self-learning in the academic and research contexts associated with the languages of one's speciality.
  • CG6 : Capacity to choose or design the right method of work to achieve the goals proposed in the academic and research contexts of the languages of one's speciality.
  • CG7 : Capacity to communicate one's conclusions and the knowledge and reasons that support them to specialist and non-specialist audiences clearly and unambiguously in the academic and research contexts of the languages of one's speciality.

  • CG8 : Use technological resources to acquire, handle, analyse, interpret and transmit information: databases, translators, spell-checkers, tools, word processors, multimedia presentations, etc.

  • CG11 : Capacity to adapt to new situations.
  • CG13 : Capacity to generate new ideas (creativity).
  • CG9 : Capacity for leadership, initiative and an entrepreneurial spirit.

  • Suficiencia investigadora en lingüística aplicada a las lenguas de especialidad.
  • Conocimiento de teorías y modelos lingüísticos para el estudio de las lenguas de especialidad y del lenguaje como evidencia.
  • Conocimiento de métodos cualitativos y cuantitativos para el análisis de las lenguas de especialidad y del lenguaje como evidencia.
  • Conocimiento de herramientas informáticas para el análisis de las lenguas de especialidad y del lenguaje como evidencia.
  • Saber exponer y defender los resultados de una investigación sobre lenguas de especialidad y lenguaje como evidencia.

1. To write a Master's dissertation in which the student should be able to:

1.1 Identify an original problem of research.

1.2 Review the state of the art.

1.3 Set up hypotheses or formulate research questions.

1.4 Design or choose convenient research methods.

1.5 Analyse linguistic data using both qualitative and quantitative methods.

1.6 State and fully discuss the major findings.

1.7 Draw major conclusions and state further lines of research.
