Enmarcada en la Materia 12. Cambio Social, La Sociología Económica es necesaria para la descripción y explicación de las relaciones sociales económicas y el conocimiento de las claves estructurales básicas que articulan la realidad material y simbólica de la sociedad. La Sociología Económica se beneficia también de los resultados más recientes, como aquellos provenientes del análisis estructural y, la evolución misma de la teoría económica, para mostrar la pertinencia y la necesidad de una aproximación sociológica de los fenómenos económicos.
