Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2011-12
By the end of the semester the students of this subject will have achieved the necessary skills to perform a critical analysis of a film production in semiotic terms. For this purpose they will have acquired a basic knowledge of film syntax within the evolution of film history, from the silent period to the XXI century. Besides this theoretical perspective, a survey of the social context in which the film is produced will help to assess its ideological impact on the general public of its country of origin and beyond. A study of film genre, using melodrama as a case study, and the blurring of boundaries with other genres and textual forms will help to get a general overview of contemporary film production using analytical tools of general literary criticism applied to both the films and also some of the texts they are based on (Much Ado About Nothing, Turn of the Screw, Strangers on a Train, Invasion of the Body Snatchers). Finally, the possibility of analyzing the individual work of a major filmmaker, Alfred Hitchcock in this semester, will help to develop a pattern of global assessment on the concept of Film d`Auteur
