Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2011-12

I. OBJECTIVES:

The general purpose of this course is:
a) to give the students the necessary knowledge (covering all the periods of the history of English, from its Indoeuropean and Germanic origins to contemporary English) for the diachronic study of the language
b) to enable the students to apply the knowledge they have acquired to tasks of linguistic analysis. This will be helped by the fact that the theoretical information will be offered with examples taken from documents corresponding to each and every stage of the development of the English language.

The course will consist of two different parts corresponding to several periods of the English Language -Old and Middle English on the one hand, and Early Modern and Contemporary English on the other-. Each part will include a theoretical and a practical section.
