The overall aim of this Master’s Degree is to provide specialist training for future professionals in the field of Institutional Translation and Interpreting, which entails a deep understanding of the most recent developments in the discipline, both in terms of the professional context as well as its working methodology.
Several further objectives are also met by the Master’s Programme, as outlined below:
3.1.1. Taking a broad and plural approach, to offer a specialised training in Institutional Translation and Interpreting which can be adapted to professional and market requirements in this field.
3.1.2. To provide the basis for consolidating a good reserve of young professionals by training them in highly demanded areas.
3.1.3. To promote professional development among Translation and Interpreting graduates and professionals, for whom specialisation is a fundamental requirement.
3.1.4. To provide the foundations for training professionals with a command of the most advanced and innovative professional techniques, and offer training in new technology applications in Institutional Translation and Interpreting.
3.1.5. To provide an interdisciplinary learning framework adapted to state of the art practices in professional Institutional Translation and Interpreting, thereby forging stronger links in terms of cooperation with other universities.
3.1.6. To promote student participation in professional study days and other meetings in the field of Translation and Interpreting, and consolidate their links with professional associations.
3.1.7. To guarantee a core specialised training that can be complemented by further, more specialised training in the specific specialist field the student has chosen, reinforced by work experience.
3.1.8. To promote the creation of Inter-University research teams in the field of specialised translation, particularly in relation to legal, administrative, economic and trade translation.

The course is divided into three modules:
a) The first module containing two basic but central components: professional codes of practice and professional practice; and proofreading and editing, which are common to all language combinations.
b) The second specialisation module consists of advanced training in institutional translation linked to each specific language combination; and,
c) The third module is based on pre-professional work experience and consolidation through a Master’s Final Project of a scientific nature.
Tripartite structure:
1st Module - Compulsory common core course - 15 ECTS credits. Approximate length: October to Christmas.
2nd Module - Specialisation module - 30 credits. Approximate length: January to May (Depending on Easter dates).
3rd Module – Work experience. 15 credits. Approximate length: April to June (partial overlapping with optional subjects in the specialisation module will be resolved through making use of spaces provided by the optional subjects which have not been chosen).
1st Module - Common core course - Compulsory for all students. 15 credits
These 15 credits corrrespond to two subjects: 1. Proofreading and editing (6 credits) and 2. Professional codes of practice and professional practice (9 credits)
2nd Module - Specialisation - 30 credits
In line with the flexibility and personalised design of the European Space for Higher Education Curriculum, this module consists of a compulsory and an optional block. Teaching on the compulsory block will cover the essential contents of the specialisation in question. 20 credits will correspond to the compulsory block, and 10 credits to the optional block. The subjects in this module are linked to specific language combinations, and in the case of the compulsory block, subjects will be offered in each language combination. As regards the optional subjects, a list of all possibilities is provided below. A limited number of these will be offered each academic year, according to teaching availability and demand over time. These subjects are as follows:

3rd Module – Work Experience. 15 credits.
This module is divided between Work Experience (9 credits) and the Master’s Final Project (6 credits), focusing on professional practice. The project will be assessed by an examining board.
The overall philosophy behind this structure is to find a balance between guaranteeing attainment of the course objectives and basic skills and the need for flexibility as regards subjects offered, so that students can tailor their studies to the area of research that most interests them. With the aim of ensuring a critical and thorough command of the subject matter as well as the basic tools for scientific research in general and of translation and interpreting research in particular, the compulsory first module has been designed to equip students with the tools necessary to acquire these skills. The third module,the individually supervised Final Master’s Project, will enable students to demonstrate their professional maturity.
As regards timetabling, the dynamics of e-learning dictate that subjects should be taught intensively and sequentially, rather than simultaneously, for teaching to be coherent and accessible to all, a goal which would not be attained easily with a multitude of forums open at the same time. Taking into account the day on which the course commences, and holiday dates, the first block (common core course worth 15 ECTS credits) will be taught between October and Christmas. The second module (specialisation, worth 30 ECTS credits) will be taught between January and May, whilst it is envisaged that the third, consisting of Work Experience (worth 9 ECTS credits) and the Master’s Final Project (worth 6 ECTS credits), worth a total of 15 ECTS credits, will run from April to June. Each credit will correspond to a student study load of 25 hours, and it is envisaged that, for full-time students, the course will be covered at a rate of approximately 1.6 ECTS credits per week, which implies a weekly study load of 40 hours.
In terms of methodology, teaching on the Master’s Degree will be completely e-based, with the sole exception of the optional interpreting subjects, which in most cases will include classroom-based learning in order to optimise the teaching-learning process.
According to the Regulations of the University of Alicante, the following requirements must be complied to have access to official taught Master’s degrees:
- Non- recognised degree certificates shall require a technical report showing an equivalence statement issued by the University of Alicante (ContinUA – Continuing Education Centre), for which the corresponding fee should be paid.
- Access through this way does under no circumstances imply prior official approval of the holder’s degree certificate, nor its recognition for purposes other than studying a master's degree.
1. Admission Profile
The Master is specifically designed for people in possession of the degree or degree in Translation and Interpreting Studies , Law, Economics or other related sciences , as well as institutional translation professionals who wish to renew or update your professional profile , provided hold a degree or grade .
Students must have an advanced level in the two languages ¿¿chosen language combination (German - Spanish , French - Spanish or English - Spanish), as the master addresses not only the translation and language teaching . Specifically, the expected level in both languages ¿¿is the degree C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ¿¿, which is defined as follows: " Can understand a wide range of long texts with a certain level of demand, and recognize implicit meaning . know express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious effort to find the right expression. you can make a flexible and effective language for social and professional purposes , academic use. can produce clear, well -structured, detailed on complex subjects , showing controlled use of organizational patterns , connectors and cohesive devices. "
2. Assessment criteria
In order to ensure quality teaching and personal attention to students, a maximum of 30 new students will be admitted for each language combination each academic year. Subject to approval by the competent authorities, the admission criteria will be published each year in detail and sufficiently in advance of the enrolment period. These criteria will be based on the overall academic record grade, on specific grades (languages and subjects related to translation and interpreting), and on applicants’ previous training. Together, these criteria will account for up to 75%, whilst relevant professional experience will count for up to 25%.

Professions for which the degree qualifies its holder
This Master’s degree has an eminently professional focus and has been designed to provide an advanced command of legal and economic translation. Whilst taking this Master’s degree does not represent a sine qua non condition for professional practice as a sworn translator, it is both evident, and indeed our aim, that by completing this Master’s Degree professionals will feel better equipped for inter-language mediation in the fields of law, administration, economics and commerce. It will also serve as a solid base for those students who wish to prepare for the sworn translator examination.

2. Equivalence Recognition Procedures, where appropriate, between the current and the new course programme.
Students enrolled in the present Doctorate in Translation and Interpreting at the University of Alicante, or on similar courses of comparable quality at other national or foreign universities, may apply for credit equivalence between the studies completed and the Master’s degree course. To this end, the Academic Committee for the new Master’s Degree will carry out the appropriate conversion of present credits to ECTS credits, applying a comprehensive approach aimed at integration. In the specific case of other Master’s Degrees from the same PCOP as the present course (“Translation and the knowledge society”), automatic credit equivalence will be given for the first module comprising the core subjects.
