The Master’s Degree in Literary Studies is structured into four modules:
Core module: General and specific methodology for the study of literature (compulsory): 24 credits. This module consists of two subjects, to be taken by all students for the Master’s Degree:
Following the guidelines of the Bologna Accords, the Master's Degree in Literary Studies also has a professional focus, offering students the resources for future entry into the labour market, fundamentally in teaching and research but also with significant openings in the field of publishing, specifically digital text editing. Accordingly, and using the University of Alicante “Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library” project underway since 1999, the Master's Degree in Literary Studies offers specific training in digital text editing, undertaken at the end of the Master's Degree programme through compulsory work experience at the University of Alicante Digital Workshop (Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library).
Optional module: Literature in Spanish, English, French, Catalan, Arabic, Greek and Latin: 18 credits. This module, consisting of optional subjects, offers students the opportunity to design a specialist literary route, studying in greater depth the literatures forming the range of cultural and linguistic contexts that comprise the Master’s Degree and culminating in the Final Project. The contents of these subjects complete and extend knowledge acquired on the first Degree programme, going beyond its diachronic perspectives and proposing themes and methodologies aimed at channelling students’ research paths.
This module is wide-ranging and flexible, covering the literary traditions currently taught at the University of Alicante:
Each of these optional blocks is made up of six optional subjects, each worth 3 credits. Students are required to take a total of 18 credits, 12 of which should be taken from the same block. The remaining may be chosen freely from amongst the remaining blocks. Accordingly, students are offered the possibility of designing their own study itinerary.
Final project (compulsory): 12 credits. This practical and obligatory module consists of a single subject – research work on any of the subjects covered on the Master’s Degree programme. The aims of the research project are, firstly, the practical application of the specific research methodology acquired in the first block and, secondly, to orient students towards subsequent independent research. The research project will be carried out by students outside of class hours, and will be supervised by Master’s Degree programme staff.
Digital text editing work experience at the University of Alicante Digital Workshop (Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library): 6 credits. This compulsory module consists of the practical application of digital editing knowledge acquired in the specific methodology block. Students will undertake work experience in several aspects of the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library digital editing process, as previous students have been doing on the Masters’ Degree programme since the 2007-2008 academic year. The agreement signed in 2009 between the Master's Degree in Literary Studies and the University of Alicante General Foundation (which is responsible for the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library) covers both Master’s Degree students’ work experience and two scholarships for graduates (see attached file). These scholarships are currently held by two students from the first edition of the Master’s Degree programme.
The specific aims of this work experience are:
By means of these activities, students are expected to acquire the basic tools necessary for all aspects of digital editing projects, and to acquire proficiency in applying their literary knowledge to the field of professional text editing.
