GENERAL COURSE PROGRAMME

The Master’s Degree in Literary Studies is structured into four modules:

Core module: General and specific methodology for the study of literature (compulsory): 24 credits. This module consists of two subjects, to be taken by all students for the Master’s Degree:

  • General methodology for the study of literary history: this theoretical-methodological subject is offered as an introduction to studies on the Master’s Degree. The aim is to complement the training received by students on their first Degree programme, offering a new, international focus on the aesthetic currents and major themes running through the history of the literatures included on the Master’s Degree programme. Accordingly, it offers students with first Degrees in language and literature (Spanish, English, French, etc.) a new perspective on literary studies, building on their previously-acquired knowledge and integrating and interrelating national and cultural environments to provide a more global vision.
  • Specific methodology (computer and literary tools for teaching, literary research and digital editing): The aim of this block is to provide students with the necessary literary resources for literary research (critical editing, bibliographical searches, databases, citation systems, etc.), along with current computer tools used in teaching and literary research.

Following the guidelines of the Bologna Accords, the Master's Degree in Literary Studies also has a professional focus, offering students the resources for future entry into the labour market, fundamentally in teaching and research but also with significant openings in the field of publishing, specifically digital text editing. Accordingly, and using the University of Alicante “Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library” project underway since 1999, the Master's Degree in Literary Studies offers specific training in digital text editing, undertaken at the end of the Master's Degree programme through compulsory work experience at the University of Alicante Digital Workshop (Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library).

Optional module: Literature in Spanish, English, French, Catalan, Arabic, Greek and Latin: 18 credits. This module, consisting of optional subjects, offers students the opportunity to design a specialist literary route, studying in greater depth the literatures forming the range of cultural and linguistic contexts that comprise the Master’s Degree and culminating in the Final Project. The contents of these subjects complete and extend knowledge acquired on the first Degree programme, going beyond its diachronic perspectives and proposing themes and methodologies aimed at channelling students’ research paths.

This module is wide-ranging and flexible, covering the literary traditions currently taught at the University of Alicante:

  • Spanish and Latin-American Literature (18 credits)
  • Literature in French (18 credits)
  • Arabic-Islamic literature (18 credits)
  • Classical literature (18 credits)

Each of these optional blocks is made up of six optional subjects, each worth 3 credits. Students are required to take a total of 18 credits, 12 of which should be taken from the same block. The remaining may be chosen freely from amongst the remaining blocks. Accordingly, students are offered the possibility of designing their own study itinerary.

Final project (compulsory): 12 credits. This practical and obligatory module consists of a single subject – research work on any of the subjects covered on the Master’s Degree programme. The aims of the research project are, firstly, the practical application of the specific research methodology acquired in the first block and, secondly, to orient students towards subsequent independent research. The research project will be carried out by students outside of class hours, and will be supervised by Master’s Degree programme staff.

Digital text editing work experience at the University of Alicante Digital Workshop (Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library): 6 credits. This compulsory module consists of the practical application of digital editing knowledge acquired in the specific methodology block. Students will undertake work experience in several aspects of the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library digital editing process, as previous students have been doing on the Masters’ Degree programme since the 2007-2008 academic year. The agreement signed in 2009 between the Master's Degree in Literary Studies and the University of Alicante General Foundation (which is responsible for the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library) covers both Master’s Degree students’ work experience and two scholarships for graduates (see attached file). These scholarships are currently held by two students from the first edition of the Master’s Degree programme.

The specific aims of this work experience are:

  • To introduce students to the use of the main tools and programmes used in the digitalisation of text and images (hand-held and desktop scanners, parameters for textual and image digitalisation, basics of optical character recognition, photo editing, etc., using Omnipage, Abyy, etc., Photoshop).
  • To introduce students to the use of the main tools and programmes used in the processing, correction and composition of texts (automation in text correcting, use of text processing programmes: Word).
  • To introduce students to the use of the main tools and programmes used in hypertext digital editing and metadata (Tiny HTML Editor, XMetal).

By means of these activities, students are expected to acquire the basic tools necessary for all aspects of digital editing projects, and to acquire proficiency in applying their literary knowledge to the field of professional text editing.
