Routes:
The three routes included on the Master’s degree course have been designed to respond to the specialist interests of potential students.
The three routes involve the same studies in terms of the conceptual tools that students need to deal with the challenges of research in teaching second/foreign languages and the search for suitable responses to the questions that can be raised by the factors involved in the process of teaching and learning second languages. They also help to focus students’ linguistic interests. Consequently, those opting for a monolingual route will specialise in the language chosen, whereas the lesser specialisation in one of the languages of those choosing the bilingual option will be compensated with a richer and broader perspective of linguistic insight, which is ideal in the multilingual and multicultural Europe of today for the process of teaching a foreign language.

Upon completion of their work experience, students must write and submit a report on the activities carried out, their observations on methods and programmes used, etc., and the cultural experiences that most stood out for them.
All students are assigned two tutors: one from the University of Alicante, and one from the centre where the student has completed his or her work experience, who must submit a report on the student’s activities during that time.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND SELECTION CRITERIA
According to the Regulations of the University of Alicante, the following requirements must be complied to have access to official taught Master’s degrees:
- Non- recognised degree certificates shall require a technical report showing an equivalence statement issued by the University of Alicante (ContinUA – Continuing Education Centre), for which the corresponding fee should be paid.
- Access through this way does under no circumstances imply prior official approval of the holder’s degree certificate, nor its recognition for purposes other than studying a master's degree.
ADMISSION AND ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
1. Admission Profile:
In accordance with the course contents and objectives, this Master’s Degree is especially suitable for students and professionals who hold a degree or diploma which has provided them with a linguistic training (Language and Literature, Linguistics, Foreign Language Teaching, Modern Languages, etc.), particularly if this was applied to Spanish and/or English, and those interested in advanced, specialised training in teaching Spanish and/or English as second/foreign languages.
Students and professionals holding a degree or diploma in other areas who are interested in acquiring an advanced training in teaching Spanish and/or English as second/foreign languages may also be admitted to the course.
2. Assessment criteria
Where demand exceeds the number of places available, the Master’s Academic Committee will select applicants according to the following criteria:
Since the Master’s Degree course offers three specialisation routes, Spanish L2/FL, English L2/FL and Spanish and English L2/FL, a prerequisite for admission onto the course, according to the specialisation route selected, is:
Applicants who wish to study this Master’s Degree course are required to have level B2 in their second language. This level is considered a prerequisite for admission to the course, and is essential if students are to be able to successfully complete the subjects and courses taught on the course.
In the case of non-native speakers, officially recognised accreditation of knowedge of their second language may be demonstrated by one of the following:
1. Officially recognised certificates (DELE or CELU for Spanish; Cambridge or TOEFL for English).
2. Academic certification accrediting successful completion of at least 18 credits in a foreign language as part of the applicant’s university studies.
3. Successful completion of the Master’s Degree course levels test.
The board responsible for the Master’s Degree will set an objective levels test for applicants who are unable to provide official accreditation of their knowledge in English and/or Spanish. The board responsible for assessing each language (whether Spanish or English) will be comprised of two of the Master’s Degree course teaching staff with experience in assessing communicative competence.
This test will focus on communication, and will include the skills identified in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It will be supervised by expert teaching staff from the Officially Recognised Master’s Degree course in Teaching Spanish and English as Second/Foreign Languages.
The assessment criteria and methodology for the entire test will be based on a B2 level of communicative competence, in accordance with the Framework directives (CEFR) 21, which state that a competent speaker at this level should demonstrate:

Professional and research.
The Master’s degree constitutes a training period for the Doctorate in Spanish and English as Second/Foreign Languages. To this end, the course includes teaching on research methodology in the field of Applied Linguistics as it pertains to teaching second/foreign languages, on the theories that have shaped or continue to shape research in this field, and on the application of new technologies in this area. The course also covers the latest advances in linguistic levels and the different aspects of communicative competence in English and/or Spanish, the specific problems posed by the peculiarities of each language, the use of literature and culture in developing linguistic competency in Spanish and/or in English, and specific lines and methods of research in these subjects.
Students that complete the 60 credits of the Master’s course will therefore be equipped to produce a doctoral thesis on one of the following lines of research:
The Master’s course also prepares students for professional practice in teaching Spanish and/or English as second/foreign languages, as well as in other fields, such as the design of materials for teaching Spanish and/or English as second/foreign languages.
Introduction to research into Spanish and/or English as second/foreign languages.
Professions for which the degree qualifies its holder.
1. In accordance with the academic and research profile cited above, the Master’s Degree course equips students to conduct research in the field of Applied Linguistics as it pertains to teaching second/foreign languages, in this case Spanish and/or English.
2. Whilst the above is the main objective of the course, the teaching provided on the latest advances in linguistic models and methods, and on specific aspects of Spanish and/or English as second/foreign languages, etc., prepares students for professional practice in teaching Spanish and/or English as second/foreign languages, as well as in other fields, such as designing materials for teaching Spanish and/or English as second/foreign languages.
1. Timescale for implementation of the Master’s Degree course
Academic year |
Implementation of Master’s degree |
2010-2011 |
1st year |
2. Procedure for equivalence recognition, where appropriate, between the current and the new course programme.
Those students from the previous programme who, once the new course programme has come into effect, wish to incorporate onto the new programme having already obtained 18 credits from the common module in the previous course programme (taught in the fourth term), plus 36-42 ECTS credits from the Spanish and English subjects taught in the first year, will be granted credit equivalence with the Spanish and English L2/FL route in the new programme for the courses they have studied, but they must complete the Master’s Final Project, worth 12 ECTS credits, in order to graduate from the course.
Since the number of credits obtained, the subjects taken and the students’ interests (particularly in terms of joining the new course programme on a particular route) may vary, credit equivalence and the additional credits required according to the specialisation route chosen will be considered according to each individual case.
In 2010-2011, when the new course programme comes into force, students following the former programme may also, if they choose, continue their studies according to the previous programme until they have obtained all 90 credits. They may join classes from subjects in the new programme that are equivalent in content and number of credits to the programme being phased out, with complementary teaching activities for any subjects that are reduced from 6 to 3 credits.
3. Studies being phased out and replaced by the proposed degree course:
Master’s Degree in Teaching Spanish and English as Second Languages (L2)/Foreign Languages (FL) (90 ECTS), regulated by Royal Decree 56/2005, which has been taught since 2006/2007.
