The basic aim of the degree course is to produce professionals in multilingual communication with a comprehensive knowledge of all areas related to translation studies (civilisation, culture, politics, business, etc.), capable of producing quality translations in a range of registers and fields, and able to adapt effectively to rapid changes in the field generated by the significant increase in economic, social and cultural exchanges between Spain and other countries. The relevance of these studies is related to an expansion at all levels of international relations and increasing globalisation in all fields. This reality demands a rapid and dynamic translation response in multilingual contexts, with the ultimate aim of contributing, together with other professionals, to translation and interpreting, the creation, correction and revision of texts, the location and management of terminological resources, language teaching, public relations and work in the media. Graduates in Translation and Interpreting may work as translators in the public or private sector.
Subjects in the Degree in Translation and Interpreting, each worth 6 European ECTS credits, are organised into semesters. Specifically, students are required to take 5 subjects each semester, to complete 30 credits per semester and 60 credits per year, for a total of 240 credits over four years.
In order to make the course compatible with other activities, students are allowed to take a part-time course consisting of 30 credits per academic year.

With regard to how the course programme for the University of Alicante Degree in Translation and Interpreting is structured, the following should be noted:
The course programme is organised into modules and units. Each module consists of one or several units encompassing related contents and learning and assessment methods, whilst units may be composed of one or more subjects. Subjects comprise discrete content matter, which may or may not be integrated. All these levels are consistent with the aims and proficiencies defined for the degree, and their teaching is rigorously coordinated.
In accordance with the guidelines indicated in Art. 12 Royal Decree 1393/2007, the University of Alicante Degree in Translation and Interpretation is structured as follows:
The course programme comprises a total of 240 credits. This covers all the theoretical and practical knowledge which the student is expected to acquire, and includes fundamental aspects of the area of knowledge concerned, compulsory and optional subjects, seminars, work experience, supervised projects, the final project and other educational activities.
According to Art. 46.2.i) of Statute 6/2001 of 21 December on Universities, students may obtain a maximum of 6 credits for participation in university activities related to culture, sport, student representation, charity and cooperation.
By this reason, in accordance with the regulation approved by Council of Government for the academic recognition of cultural university activities, sportive, of representation estudiantil, solidarias and of cooperation of the University of Alicante, the student has guaranteeed the possibility to obtain until 6 credits of academic recognition of credits realising this type of activities. Before the beginning of each academic course, the Council of Government will define the nature of the activities that will have this academic recognition.
As specified in the programme, ECTS credits correspond to study hours, both in and out of class (study time and work performed by students to attain the learning aims of each subject on the course programme). The 240 credits containing all the theoretical and practical knowledge to be acquired by students are taught in the form of seminars, work experience, reading, guided coursework, etc., and conclude with the writing and defence of the Final Project.

The temporalidad of the optional subject will be able to be modified inside the same course in function of the organisation of the centre.
Students who study an undergraduate degree at the University of Alicante must confirm a minimum level of B1 in a foreign language (a B2 is recommended) in order to obtain the diploma.
The required language level is in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
The language accreditation requirement can be obtained previously or at any time during university studies. However, the language requirement will be necessary in order to be able to assess the final year project.
The different forms of obtaining such language requirement can be consulted in the additional information in this section.
Students who want to have a career in non-university teaching when they finish their studies are recommended to obtain the teaching competence certificate (Valencian and/or foreign languages).
This certificate can be obtained by taking specific itineraries in your university studies or by taking the UA teaching competence course in Valencian, German, French and English.
All the official undergraduate degrees must be completed by preparing and defending a final year project, which must be done in the final phase of the studies and be aimed at the assessment of competences associated to the degree.
The final year project must be an original, independent and personal work. The elaboration of it may by individual or coordinated. Each student will prepare this project under the supervision of a tutor, allowing students to show the received training content in an integrated many, as well as the acquired competences associated to the undergraduate degree.
In order to register in the final year project, students must comply with the requirements established in the “Regulations for continuation studies for students registered in undergraduate degrees at the University of Alicante”. Among the requirements established to be able to register in the final year project, a minimum of 168 credits must be passed in undergraduate degrees with a total of 240 credits, and a minimum of 228 credits in undergraduate degrees with a total of 300 credits or more.
In order for the final year project to be assessed, a B1 level of a foreign language (B2 is recommended) must be confirmed.
Admission to this degree course is open to any applicant who meets one of the following entrance requirements:
1. SPANISH BACCALAUREATE (LOMCE) UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE EXAM (PAU): Although students can access university by means of any Baccalaureate specialization, the recommended one is Humanities and Social Sciences.

2. PREVIOUS BACCALAUREATES WITH OR WITHOUT A PASS IN THE UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE EXAM (PAU): Students who have completed their Baccalaureate under previous education systems and have passed the PAU will be able to use the mark obtained in their application.
3. VOCATIONAL EDUCATION: Vocational educational qualifications such as senior technician, senior technician of plastic arts and design, or senior technician in sports is the preferred professional area although access to this degree may be through any professional field.
4. STUDENTS FROM EDUCATION SYSTEMS IN COUNTRIES OF THE EUROPEAN UNION OR OTHER STATES WITH WHICH SPAIN HAS AN INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENT: Accreditation is required and issued by Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED).
5. STUDENTS FROM FOREIGN EDUCATION SYSTEMS: Prior to applying for the validation of their foreign Baccalaureate, students may sit for up to 4 exams in subjects offered by the Pruebas de Competencias Específicas (PCE) organised by UNED (at least one subject from the core subjects).
6. OTHER: University degrees and other similar qualifications. University entrance exam for students over 25 (preferential option: Arts and Humanities). Access on the basis of professional experience (applicants over 40 years of age). Access to applicants aged 45 years or more by means of an exam.

In order to be admitted to this degree, new students must possess previous knowledge of a B language corresponding to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The professional profile that the Degree in Translation and Interpretation aims to produce is that of a bilingual professional with multi-lingual communicative skills, capable of working in environments requiring linguistic, social and cultural mediation.
The new degree (Grado) aims to produce with a thorough command of basic professional translation techniques, including comparative linguistic analysis, textual analysis, interpretation of texts in different languages, documentation, and the technology and techniques of certain specialised areas.
The following comprise the basic professional profiles:
PROFILE 1. PROFESSIONAL “GENERAL” TRANSLATION AND SWORN TRANSLATION
a) An interest in languages and cultures.
b) Perfect command of their mother tongue and its variants.
c) Extensive knowledge of the source languages.
d) Command of professional computer tools.
a) Mental flexibility and a capacity to adapt to varying professional environments.
b) A capacity for teamwork (including a positive attitude towards the work of their proofreaders).
c) Attention to detail.
d) Intellectual curiosity
e) An awareness of one’s own limits.
a) Specialised knowledge of their subject and its language.
b) Skilled in professional management, research and applied terminology.
c) Adept at time-management in order to comply with deadlines.
d) Project management skills.
a) Team coordination skills.
b) Initiative, in keeping with the size of the organisation or team.
c) Documentation and terminology skills.
d) Most particularly, teamwork skills.
PROFILE 2. LINGUISTIC AND CULTURAL MEDIATORS
Linguistic and cultural mediators are required to have a good knowledge of A, B, C and D languages and cultures, enabling them to operate in business or other situations, managing overseas clients and dealing with interlocutors from other countries (branches or affiliates, suppliers, authorities, associate bodies, etc.), as part of the daily work in a range of sectors. Linguistic knowledge includes oral and written communication, comparative pragmatic analysis and expression techniques.
PROFILE 3. LIAISON INTERPRETER
For the purposes of the course, the term “liaison interpreter” also covers community interpreting.
a) A good command of basic interpretation techniques.
b) Excellent command of the native language, in addition to complete proficiency in the working languages and a solid grounding in general culture.
c) Ability to express oneself with precision in the language pair used in each situation.
d) A command of sight translation techniques.
e) A command of analysis, synthesis and communication techniques and terminology management.
f) Punctuality.
g) General cultural curiosity.
h) A capacity for teamwork.
i) Understanding the cultural and social contexts and communication needs of both parties, without taking sides.
Training in conference interpretation is reserved for postgraduate studies, as the basic proficiencies must be complemented by aptitudes in the following fields: consecutive and simultaneous interpretation techniques, command of state-of-the-art technology, documentation, active and passive capacities in different languages, developing short-term memory, structural discourse analysis, techniques for taking and reading notes and oral expression techniques. These are the skills considered necessary in order to work as a conference interpreter, whether autonomously or in international organisations, such as European institutions or the UN.
PROFILE 4. READERS, EDITORS, COPY EDITORS, PROOFREADERS
a) Advise publishers with regard to the suitability of books for translation or publication (readers).
b) Edit a range of texts (editors).
c) Read galleys and second proofs to correct errors (proofreaders).
a) Correcting elements that do not comply with the rules of the language in each specific register and revising ambiguous or obscure passages (copy editors)
b) Reading translated texts to check for errors in style or linguistic transfer (reviewers).
PROFILE 5. LEXICOGRAPHERS, TERMINOLOGISTS AND LINGUISTIC PROJECT MANAGERS
a) Management of terminological databases.
b) Training personnel in terminological management.
c) Management and coordination of terminological consensus.
d) Problem-solving and decision-taking.
e) Participation in interdisciplinary work groups.
f) Drawing up lexicographical and terminological protocols.
g) Linguistic project managers must have a range of skills, including technological and documentary skills, a broad comparative knowledge of several languages and cultures, oral and written communication skills, multi-tasking management skills, analytical capacity, a basic understanding of finance and technical knowledge concerning their area of specialisation. Project management includes:
1. Linguistic and communicative analysis and planning.
2. Problem-solving and decision-taking.
3. Financial analysis.
4. Coordinating and training personnel in translation, interpretation and linguistic mediation.
5. Negotiation.
6. Management of external interlocutors.
7. Harmonisation and revision of documents.
8. Organisation and management of meetings.
9. Establishing deadlines and risk assessment.
10. Market assessment.
11. Locating and using technical translation resources,
12. Quality evaluation.
Professions for which the degree qualifies its holder.
There are two main directions for future professional opportunities. The first is the field of international relations (institutions and business), multilingual interpersonal mediation, multilingual information management, editing and revising texts and correspondence in first, second and third languages, and any other linguistic assistance work involving the use of at least one foreign language (e.g. tourism), with special emphasis on general translation and liaison interpreting.
The second direction is more specialised, and primarily includes specialised translation (particularly legal, technical, audiovisual, literary and localisation), terminology and conference interpretation.

Once a course has been phased out, the subjects corresponding to the course will no longer be taught. Students who do not wish to take the new degree course subjects are entitled to sit four examinations in the two academic years following the end of each year. Any students wishing to continue their studies after sitting and failing these tests will be required to follow the new plan, according to the adaptation system established in the new plan.
