CONTROL BIOLÓGICO DE PLAGAS Y ENFERMEDADES VEGETALES: El continuo crecimiento de la población humana requiere la búsqueda de nuevos caminos para incrementar la producción de alimentos. Una forma de conseguir este objetivo es la reducción de las pérdidas en cultivos agrícolas provocadas por organismos causantes de enfermedades y plagas (insectos, nematodos y hongos patógenos de vegetales). Uno de los métodos que más se utilizan para contrarrestar estos males es el uso de agroquímicos. Estos productos representan un papel muy importante en la reducción de los daños económicos en los cultivos. Sin embargo, la toxicidad elevada de algunos de ellos, su persistencia en el medio y su mal uso han llevado a un replanteamiento de las tácticas de control de plagas. Por ello, actualmente se desarrollan agentes de control biológico, es decir, organismos vivos que reducen la población de insectos plaga y patógenos que afectan a los cultivos o depredación. Existen hongos, bacterias y virus antagonistas de los agentes causales de plagas y enfermedades vegetales. Estos organismos (los hongos en particular) despiertan el interés de las empresas y órganos de investigación por su papel en el control de plagas y enfermedades de cultivos sin dañar el medio y la salud. En el Laboratorio de Fitopatología del Departamento de Ciencias Ambientales y Recursos Naturales de la Universidad de Alicante, llevamos más de diez años de investigación sobre el modo de acción, ecología, producción y desarrollo de hongos nematófagos y entomopatógenos como agentes de control biológico. Nuestro grupo cuenta con una dilatada experiencia de colaboración (proyectos conjuntos con financiación oficial -EEUU, UE y Nacional- y privada) e intercambio con grupos investigadores de varios países de la UE, EEUU y Australia.
