Competencies and objectives

 

Course context for academic year 2015-16

The Acoustic subject is basic in the Bachelor's degree in Engineering in Sound & Vision. Provides the theoretical concepts and principles of physics to develop specific skills grade.

The course depends on various subjects such as:

  • Physical Foundations of Engineering I (20003)
  • Basic Mathematics (20004)
  • Physical Foundations of Engineering II (20008)
  • Mathematics I (20009)

This set of courses provides tools that are necessary for the proper development and understanding of the Acoustics subject (20010). In addition, this course is coordinated with other of degree such as Acoustical Transducers, Insulation and Conditioning, Acoustical Design of Enclosures and Vibroacoustics, which are used in fundamental concepts of Acoustics.

UA Basic Transversal Competences

  • CT14 : Capacity for self-criticism needed to analyse and improve the quality of projects.
  • CT7 : Capacity for oral and written exposition.

 

Specific Competences:>>Basic

  • B3 : Understand and master the basic concepts of the general laws of mechanics, thermodynamics, fields and waves and electromagnetism the their application to solve engineering problems.

 

Basic Transversal Competences

  • CT2 : Students should know how to apply their knowledge to their job or vocation in a professional manner and should possess those skills that are usually reflected when preparing and defending arguments and solving problems in their field of study.
  • CT3 : Students should have the ability to gather and interpret relevant data (normally within their field of study) to give opinions that include a reflection on important, social, scientific, ethical matters, etc.
  • CT4 : Students should be able to transmit information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • CT5 : Students should have developed the necessary learning skills to take on later studies with a high level of autonomy.

 

Specific Competences: >> Competences Common to the Telecommunications Branch

  • C1 : Capacity for self-learning of new knowledge and techniques appropriate for the conception, development and exploitation of telecommunications systems and services.
  • C3 : Capacity to use computer tools to find bibliographic resources and information related to telecommunications and electronics.
  • C8 : Capacity to understand the mechanisms for propagating and transmitting electromagnetic and acoustic waves, and their corresponding transmitting and receiving devices.

 

Specific Competences: >> Competences Specific to Sound and Image

  • E1 : Capacity to construct, exploit and manage telecommunications services and applications, understanding these to be systems for the acquisition, analogue and digital treatment, coding, transport, representation, processing, storage, reproduction, management and presentation of audiovisual services and multimedia information.
  • E3 : Capacity to carry out projects for premises and facilities intended for producing and recording audio and video signals.
  • E4 : Capacity to carry out acoustic engineering projects on: Insulation and acoustic preparation of premises, Public address installations, Specification, analysis and selection of electroacoustic transducers, Systems for the measurement, analysis and control of noise and vibration, Environmental acoustics, Underwater acoustic systems.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2015-16

Acquire the skills needed for a college student specialized in the field of Engineering in Sound and Image. The student will have a background in terms of basic scientific and technical training of and the basic knowledge of the laws and principles of acoustics, needed to access the understanding of different materials which will be held throughout the degree. Specifically: 

  • Acquire basic knowledge of vibration dynamics.
  • To be able of defining what a sound wave is, how it spreads and the phenomena of reflection, refraction, transmission and absorption.
  • Study the behaviour of a sound source in terms of directivity.
  • Acquire basic knowledge of sound wave propagation in tubes and learn how acoustic filters and resonators.
  • Knowing how hearing and speech is produced, emphasizing the physical aspects thereof.
  • Acquire the basic knowledge regarding sound environmental and to get closer to some of the parameters used for noise measurements.
  • Knowing how sound waves propagate in water and their applications.
  • Reinforce the concepts covered in laboratory.
