The course "Immigration, Human Rights and Border Control in the European Union" is a 4-ECTS-credit optional SUBJECT offered to students enrolled in any official or unofficial University of Alicante degree and other people interested in these matters. The aim of the course is to study and analyse the origins and evolution of the conditions and protection system of refugees, migrants and other displaced persons reaching the territory of EU member states. The course is intended to provide a critical understanding of a series of current issues, including the EU’s response to the tragedy of refugees, asylum trends in Europe and displacement within its borders, EU asylum-related legislation, or internal security issues due to terrorist attacks. This course contributes to the academic profile of all UA degrees as well as to the development of degree-specific skills, as it gives some insight into the policies, values and principles of the European Union, its institutions and court system in connection with highly relevant areas, such as the EU asylum, migration or border policy and human rights protection. Furthermore, this learning process becomes strategic if aimed at further specialisation in the future, with new opportunities regarding the prospects of increased cross-border regional integration and the needs for internationalisation of companies, public entities and all kinds of organisations.
