Course context for academic year 2018-19

The subject of "economic-financial English" develops contents and skills which are basic in the Master’s academic training. Language knowledge and business communicative strategies are two of the fundamental pillars in the students’ future professional specialization as they cover two of the professional areas with most demand today. This subject is complemented by the equivalent: "Economic and financial Spanish".

Specific Competences (CE)

  • CE11 : Use the perspectives, theories and analysis techniques that are essential for constructing the theoretical framework of Forensic Linguistics.
  • CE17 : Be able to elucidate the linguistic nature that distinguishes the varieties of IFE: the terminology, syntax, rhetorical organisation and communicative strategies.
  • CE18 : Be able to control the idiosyncratic subtleties and cultural/social differences that are essential for interpersonal relationships in academic and professional contexts (cultural values, norms of courtesy, non-verbal communication, etc.).
  • CE19 : Be able to use the communicative and discursive techniques common to most of the discourses of the speciality, which serve to achieve different communicative purposes (argument techniques, presentation description, narrative, explanation, etc.).
  • CE2 : Apply the theories, models and linguistic tools that are relevant for study and research of the IFE.
  • CE20 : Be able to use resources for the transmission of scientific knowledge to present the research carried out in the context of the languages of the speciality.
  • CE22 : Be able to prepare effective texts in the different languages of the speciality, oral and written, in English and Spanish, according to the contextual and discursive needs and expectations.
  • CE25 : Ability to use existing resources to obtain, handle, interpret, manage and transmit information: databases, written and oral corpora, Internet and the ICTs.
  • CE32 : Ability to handle and assess the value of documentary resources that allow one to approach the understanding, production or translation of specialised texts correctly, from English to Spanish and vice versa.
  • CE33 : Ability to give an academic presentation orally in English and Spanish in academic and research contexts.
  • CE36 : Ability to apply linguistic knowledge to researching some aspect related to the languages of the speciality (English and Spanish).
  • CE4 : Master the specific terminology of different kinds of the IFE in the contexts where they are used.
  • CE6 : Be able to analyse the communicative genres of the different varieties of IFE.
  • CE9 : Be able to transmit the techniques of Plain English and its application to legal English.

 

General Competences of the Degree Course:>>Instrumental: Conceptual or Cognitive

  • CG1 : Know how to apply the main perspectives, theories, techniques and analysis models in the field of interdisciplinary research of linguistics applied to the study of the IFE.
  • CG2 : Know how to apply the main perspectives, theories, techniques and analysis models in the field of interdisciplinary research of linguistics applied to the study of the EFE.

 

General Competences of the Degree Course:>>Instrumental: Procedural or Methodological

  • CG3 : Ability to apply the knowledge acquired and solve problems in new or little-known settings within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to the languages of one's speciality.
  • CG4 : Know how to integrate knowledge and deal with the complexity of giving opinions on the basis of information that may be incomplete or limited and includes reflections on the social and ethical responsibilities associated with applying one's knowledge and opinions in academic and research contexts.
  • CG5 : Possess the ability for self-learning in the academic and research contexts associated with the languages of one's speciality.
  • CG6 : Capacity to choose or design the right method of work to achieve the goals proposed in the academic and research contexts of the languages of one's speciality.
  • CG7 : Capacity to communicate one's conclusions and the knowledge and reasons that support them to specialist and non-specialist audiences clearly and unambiguously in the academic and research contexts of the languages of one's speciality.

  • CG8 : Use technological resources to acquire, handle, analyse, interpret and transmit information: databases, translators, spell-checkers, tools, word processors, multimedia presentations, etc.

Learning outcomes (Training objectives)

  • Identificar las características principales del Inglés Económico, Financiero y Comercial en sus distintas facetas y planos lingüísticos a través de textos reales representativos de los distintos ámbitos y sub ámbitos de especialidad.
  • Conocer la terminología especializada de las distintas ramas de la economía, las finanzas y el comercio internacional, así como profundizar en su uso y aplicación de forma contextualizada.
  • Participar activamente en situaciones, representaciones y tareas propias del mundo profesional mediante simulaciones basadas en la utilización del inglés como lenguaje de especialidad en las áreas de referencia.
  • Adquisición de destrezas y capacidades estratégicas a la hora de emplear la terminología y las estructuras más relevantes del Inglés Económico-Financiero en ambientes empresariales o afines a los negocios, el emprendimiento, las finanzas, el marketing, la búsqueda de talento, la promoción y financiación de proyectos, la consultoría lingüística, la dinamización corporativa y el comercio exterior.
  • Optimizar el aprovechamiento de recursos lingüísticos y terminológicos existentes con idea de crear y/o adaptar materiales propios que respondan a necesidades académicas, profesionales y profesionalizantes detectadas durante el desarrollo de la asignatura con el fin de generar un bagaje de conocimiento especializado y propio en función de las preferencias e intereses individuales y colectivos percibidos en el aula.
