  ENGLISH I

Competencies and objectives

 

Course context for academic year 2019-20

 

  • The subject of Inglés I will be imparted in the third and fourth years of the undergraduate degree courses of Engineering and Architecture. This subject together with Inglés II will enable students to obtain the University of Alicante’s required English language degree, B1. The students are strongly advised to have previous knowledge of the language (A2 or equivalent level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
  • Both subjects, Inglés I and Inglés II, will necessarily contain solid technical and scientific components linguistically dealt with, which will eventually permit students to tackle oral and written information required in their formal academic and professional training. Specifically, Inglés I seeks to enable students to acquire the abilities and strategies to read and understand oral and written texts of technical and scientific nature. Students should be able to know and reasonably apply linguistic and extra-linguistic resources which feature scientific discourse in English in order to effectively address and solve major issues in their particular fields.

DEGREE IN SOUND AND IMAGE IN TELECOMMUNICATION ENGINEERING

 

UA Basic Transversal Competences

  • CT11 : Capacity to learn and apply new concepts and methods in an autonomous and interdisciplinary fashion.
  • CT12 : Capacity to assimilate and adapt to the permanent evolution of technology when developing one's professional career.
  • CT6 : Capacity to use the English language fluently to access technical information, respond to the needs of society and be self-sufficient when preparing one's professional career.

 

Basic Transversal Competences

  • CT1 : Students should show they possess and understand knowledge in a field of study that continues from general secondary education and is usually found at a level which, although supported by advanced textbooks, also includes certain aspects that involve knowledge arising from the cutting edge of their field of study.
  • CT3 : Students should have the ability to gather and interpret relevant data (normally within their field of study) to give opinions that include a reflection on important, social, scientific, ethical matters, etc.
  • CT4 : Students should be able to transmit information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • CT5 : Students should have developed the necessary learning skills to take on later studies with a high level of autonomy.

 

Specific Competences: >> Competences Common to the Telecommunications Branch

  • C1 : Capacity for self-learning of new knowledge and techniques appropriate for the conception, development and exploitation of telecommunications systems and services.
  • C3 : Capacity to use computer tools to find bibliographic resources and information related to telecommunications and electronics.

  • CG-1 : Capacity to solve any mathematical problems that may arise in engineering. Ability to apply knowledge of: linear algebra, geometry, differential geometry, differential and integral calculus, differential equations and partial derivatives, numerical methods, numerical algorithms, statistics and optimisation.

Learning outcomes (Training objectives)

 

GRADO EN INGENIERÍA MULTIMEDIA

  • Capacidad para resolver problemas con iniciativa, toma de decisiones, autonomía y creatividad. Capacidad para saber comunicar y transmitir los conocimientos, habilidades y destrezas de la profesión de Ingeniero/a Multimedia.
  • Capacidad de trabajar en un grupo multidisciplinar y en un entorno multilingüe y de comunicar, tanto por escrito como de forma oral, conocimientos, procedimientos, resultados e ideas relacionadas con las Tecnologías de la Información y de las Comunicaciones y, más concretamente, con los aspectos multimedia de dichas tecnologías.
  • Capacidad de manejar cualquier fuente de información relacionada con la titulación, incluyendo bibliografía y materiales en línea en forma de texto, imagen, sonido o vídeo.


GRADO EN INGENIERÍA CIVIL

  • Capacitación científico-técnica para el ejercicio de la profesión de Ingeniero Técnico de Obras Públicas y conocimiento y ejercicio de las funciones de asesoría, análisis, planificación, diseño, cálculo, proyecto, dirección, construcción, gestión, mantenimiento, conservación y explotación en el ámbito de la Ingeniería Civil.
  • Capacidad para la gestión, el mantenimiento, conservación y explotación de infraestructuras, en el ámbito de la Ingeniería Civil.
  • Conocimiento y capacidad de aplicación de técnicas de gestión empresarial y legislación laboral.

GRADO EN TECNOLOGÍAS DE LA INFORMACIÓN PARA LA SALUD

  • Comprender información científico-técnica oral y escrita en inglés.
  • Adquirir capacidad para comunicarse oralmente y por escrito en inglés en temas técnicos y divulgativos.

 

 

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2019-20

 

General Objectives

 

  • Acquire and know how to use the language of English for science and technology. 
  • Develop strategies to identify and analyze the most usual semantic-syntactical structures in oral and written scientific discourse channeled in English.
  • Acquire the skills to interpret and apply the language of visuals. 
  • Acquire and put into practice varying reading speeds to apply them for different reading purposes: skimming, scanning, and so on.
  • Know how to take notes and how to summarize oral passages from lectures delivered in English of scientific and technical content
  • Acquire strategies for an effective oral communication to address issues pertaining to the world of science and engineering.
  • Know how to use ICT effectively enough to develop oral and written communicative activities in the LMS (Moodle)
  • Make a repertoire of question-solving techniques available to the students to undertake any challenging activity of scientific and technical nature delivered in English

 

The lecturers’ specific aims for the subject

  • Build up the means to reach the standards for level B1 as established in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
  • Practise oral and written reception and production strategies in the ICT most relevant fields (academic, job market, publicity to name some).
