Competencies and objectives

Course context for academic year 2018-19

The Television course provides students general knowledge about the design of a TV system as well as the specifics of digital television systems covering all the processing steps from the generation of the signal in origin to signal reproduction for broadcasting purposes.

To this aim, basic and characteristic parameters of a television system are discussed, as well as the signal processing chain and the broadcasting media commonly employed.

In addition, current digital television standards of generation, compression, distribution, and broadcasting of the signal are presented and several technological aspects supporting them are analysed.

This course is also the starting point for the rest of subjects that deal with image processing and transmission.

Regarding the prerequisites, this course requires a perfect understading and knowledge of the contents discussed in previous courses, so it is strongly recommended to have passed the following subjects:

- Signals and Systems: background on Signal Theory

- Digital Signal Processing: background on Signal Theory

- Communication Theory: background on Signal Modulation Schemes

- Engineering Optical Fundamentals: background on Optics, Light, Colour

- Physics Fundamentals II: background on Electromagnetism
