La Edafología es la ciencia que estudia el suelo como un recurso natural esencial para el desarrollo de los ecosistemas y la actividad humana. La asignatura aborda el suelo como un sistema vivo, dinámico y esencial para el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas terrestres. Lejos de considerarse un simple soporte físico, el suelo se estudia como un medio complejo donde interactúan de forma continua sus fases mineral, orgánica, líquida y biológica, determinando procesos clave como el ciclo de nutrientes, la fertilidad y la regulación hídrica, entre otros.
El programa también proporciona una visión integrada del suelo, desde su origen y formación hasta su clasificación a escala global. Se analizan además sus propiedades físicas, químicas y biológicas, con especial atención a la materia orgánica, la dinámica del agua, la capacidad de intercambio iónico y la actividad de los organismos del suelo.
El componente práctico permite al estudiantado aplicar técnicas básicas de caracterización edáfica, interpretando los diferentes parámetros. Este enfoque experimental facilita la conexión entre procesos teóricos y su manifestación real en distintos tipos de suelos.
En conjunto, la asignatura destaca el papel del suelo como interfaz clave entre geosfera, biosfera y atmósfera, fundamental para comprender procesos ecológicos, la productividad de los ecosistemas y los retos asociados a su conservación y gestión sostenible.
