Competencies and objectives


Course context for academic year 2021-22

This course intends that students acquire a general knowledge of organic chemistry in the industry, necessary for their proper training as a chemist. In the first place, a comprehensive review of organic compounds having industrial interest will be presented, as well as their large-scale preparation and subsequent uses following a logical order by functional groups. Secondly a study of the most important types of industries in the area of ¿¿organic chemistry, its peculiarities, way of working and the most important products they develop will be held. Student must apply prior knowledge on reactivity of functional groups in organic molecules, nomenclature, reactions in which they participate and the operating mechanisms. They must also demonstrate their ability to apply the concepts, principles and theories in which organic chemistry is based to solve the most common problems encountered in the industrial synthesis of organic compounds. Particular attention to safety issues and the environment in the synthesis of compounds on an industrial scale will be provided. Finally, it is intended that students manage to study and plan their activities individually and in groups.

  • CE24 : Show knowledge and understanding of the essential facts, concepts, principles and theories associated with the different areas of Chemistry
  • CE26 : Recognise and analyse new problems and plan strategies to solve them
  • CE30 : Handle chemical reagents, instruments and devices safely.
  • CE31 : Carry out standard laboratory procedures for analytical and synthetic tasks related to organic and inorganic systems.
  • CE32 : Use standard chemical instruments for identification, quantification, separation and structural determination.
  • CE33 : Monitor by observing and measuring chemical properties, events or changes, gathering the appropriate information.
  • CE35 : Interpret data obtained from laboratory observation and measurement.
  • CE37 : Evaluate the risks involved in using chemical substances and laboratory procedures, as well as managing any waste generated correctly.
  • CE38 : Use inductive and deductive methods correctly in the field of Chemistry.
  • CE39 : Recognise and evaluate chemical processes in daily life.
  • CE40 : Relate Chemistry to other disciplines.

Getting the student knows organic products of industrial and commercial importance, their preparation and use , as well as the scaling of organic reactions. Familiarization with the equipment and infrastructure typical of such industries. Achieve that the student knows the main sectors of Industrial Organic Chemistry, products, applications and procedures.
