Competencies and objectives

 

Course context for academic year 2014-15

Aquesta és l'única assignatura específica de tecnologies de la traducció del Grau de Traducció e Interpretació que s'imparteix a la Universitat d'Alacant; s'entén, per tant, que ha de garantir que l'alumnat assolisca totes les competències tecnològiques necessàries per al treball de traducció, incloent les competències bàsiques d'informàtica necessàries.

Aquestes habilitats tecnològiques han de capacitar els futurs professionals a fer traduccions de qualitat en registres i àmbits temàtics diversos, adaptant-se eficientment a un entorn que evoluciona molt ràpidament a causa del gran augment en els intercanvis socials, econòmics i culturals que caracteritzen la globalització. En particular, els ha de fer capaços de fer front a l'exigència de temps de traducció ràpids i productes en adaptació constant, tant en sectors públics com privats.

La matèria capacita en particular professionals dels següents perfils: traductors «generalistes», traductors jurats i gestors de projectes lingüístics, encara que les habilitats que l'alumnat adquirirà també hi seran útils en perfils com el d'intèrpret, mediador cultural o lexicògraf/terminòleg.

General Competences (CG)

  • CG1 : Ability to communicate in the different working languages: languages A (Catalan/Spanish, Level C2 of the European framework), languages B (Level B2/C1), languages C (Level B1/B2 for languages that are taught in secondary education and Level A2/B1 for those not taught in secondary education) and languages D (Level A1/A2). Ability to communicate (oral and written) is understood to refer to understanding and expression and includes grammatical subcompetence (mastery of the linguistic code), sociolinguistic subcompetence (regulates adaptation to the context and is linked with the linguistic variation occurring according the different register elements), pragmatic subcompetence (related to functional use of the language and mastery of discourse, cohesion and coherence). Communicative competence must include at least two languages and cultures (includes passive and active communication stages, as well as the textual conventions of different working cultures and the corresponding cultural, encyclopaedic and thematic knowledge).
  • CG2 : Instrumental competence. Includes the use of documentary sources, terminology search and the management of glossaries, databases, etc., and also the use of the most useful computer applications for exercising the profession (text editors, desktop publishers, databases, Internet, e-mail, translation and editing programmes, translation memories, etc.), as well as other tools such as the fax, dictaphone and the mechanisms and apparatus needed for interpreting booths, etc.).
  • CG3 : Competence to exercise the profession on the labour and deontological market, consisting of the knowledge and skills related to acting as a professional translator and the job market. Includes basic knowledge for managing one's professional practice and factors associated with public and private law, the economy and business (contracts, tax obligations, budgets, financial aspects, invoicing, etc.) and with the deontological code and professional associations. Also such skills as memory, reflexes, creativity, capacities such as trustworthiness, attention span, organisation and planning, memory, capacity for analysis and synthesis, automation of the most common tasks, decision-making, interest in a job well done and a professional approach, the ability to adapt to new situations, initiative, etc. In addition, interpersonal skills such as the ability to relate with others and professional teamwork, not only with other translators and professionals in the field (proof-readers, documentalists, terminologists), but also with clients, initiators, authors, users and experts in the subjects being translated, etc.
  • CG4 : Competence in transference or strategy, understood as the ability to carry out the transference process from the original text and re-express it in the mother tongue according to the purpose of the translation, the characteristics of the recipient and other parameters of the translation project for all kinds of general and specialised texts. Includes subcompetences relating to the procedures applied for organising the work involved, identifying and solving problems and self-assessment, documentation strategies and the ability to use procedures to compensate for deficiencies in other subcompetences and solve problems during the translation process.

  • CE1.1 : Understand all kinds of texts (oral and written), both general and specialised (languages A, B and C), in the corresponding working language.
  • CE1.2 : Express oneself orally and in writing about general and specialist subjects (languages A, B and C).
  • CE1.4 : Revise (languages A and B) all kinds of text (orthography, morphosyntax, style, typography), etc.
  • CE1.6 : Produce oral and written texts adapted to the communication function, type of register, etc.

 

Specific Competences (CE):>>For CG2

  • CE2.1 : Use computer resources and applications that are useful for translation (terminology management programs, translation memories, CAT or automatic programs, databases, search engines, etc.).
  • CE2.2 : Master information and document search techniques.

 

Specific Competences (CE):>>For CG3

  • CE3.1 : Understand how the translation market works (type of translator, types of translation, type of task, etc.).
  • CE3.10 : Develop the capacity for logical and critical reasoning.
  • CE3.11 : Develop cognitive skills related to interpreting (attention span, instant comprehension, memory, rapid reflexes, physical and mental stamina, capacity for self-criticism, etc.).
  • CE3.3 : Organise work and design, manage and coordinate translation projects.
  • CE3.4 : Ability to make decisions.
  • CE3.5 : Ability to work autonomously.
  • CE3.6 : Capacity for teamwork.
  • CE3.7 : Develop interpersonal skills in the context of linguistic mediation.
  • CE3.8 : Proofread rigorously and guarantee the quality of translations.

 

Specific Competences (CE):>>For CG4

  • CE4.3 : Assimilate the communicative purpose of translation, the importance of quality in the target language and the importance of the comprehension stage.
  • CE4.6 : Develop creativity to solve translation problems.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2014-15

Els objectius van organitzats per unitats didàctiques (UDx):

UD1: Què estudiarem en aquest curs?  Conéixer les modalitats i l’abast de l’aplicabilitat de les tecnologies de la informació i el coneixement a la traducció, reconeixent quines parts del treball de traducció poden ser automatitzades i quines no.

UD2: Ordinadors i programes. Dominar alguns conceptes bàsics sobre el funcionament dels ordinadors personals que permeten millorar-ne la utilització pràctica i la comprensió de les seues aplicacions a la traducció.

UD3: Internet. Conéixer un conjunt de conceptes bàsics sobre Internet i la seua aplicació a la tasca de traducció.

UD4: Textos i formats. Saber alguns conceptes fonamentals sobre l’emmagatzematge, el format, l’estructuració, la presentació, la creació i la manipulació de documents de text.

UD5: Bases de dades lèxiques. Comprendre alguns conceptes bàsics del funcionament de les bases de dades i aplicar-los a les bases de dades lèxiques o terminològiques.

UD6: Usos reals de la traducció automàtica. Conéixer les maneres d’utilització real de la traducció automàtica a pesar de la seua imperfecció.

UD7: Estratègies i limitacions de la traducció automàtica.  Conéixer les estratègies bàsiques de traducció automàtica i la seua implementació en fases o tasques consecutives ben diferenciades i aprendre a identificar-les analitzant els resultats de traducció de textos reals o sintètics (creats a propòsit).  Identificar l’ambigüitat del llenguatge humà com una de les causes fonamentals de problemes en traducció automàtica, comprendre la diversitat dels seus mecanismes i identificar clarament la naturalesa de l’ambigüitat d’un enunciat donat.

UD8: Avaluació de la traducció automàtica.  Saber usar la comprensió del funcionament dels sistemes de traducció automàtica per a avaluar amb el nivell tècnic adequat i amb criteris clars i ben fonamentats els programes disponibles actualment sobre ordinadors personals.

UD9: Traducció assistida mitjançant memòries de traducció. Entendre la importància de les memòries de traducció com a solució eficient al problema de la traducció de textos amb un grau alt de repetitivitat.

UD10: Problemàtica de la utilització de memòries de traducció. Ser conscients dels problemes que sorgeixen quan cal compartir memòries de traducció entre traductors i conéixer les solucions existents.

UD11: La traducció automàtica i la traducció assistida amb memòries de traducció en aplicacions reals. Saber combinar traducció automàtica i memòries de traducció i elegir la tecnologia que millor s'ajusta a la tasca de traducció concreta (parell de llengües, grau de repetitivitat).
