Course context for academic year 2020-21
The main objective of Academic English II is to develop oral communication skills in academic English and to acquire a C1 level, according to the CEFR. We will deal with the components of oral communication, verbal and non-verbal aspects (linguistic, paralinguistic and extralinguistic), and multimodality in academic oral genres. However, the written communication skills acquired in Academic English I will also be object of continuous practice.

To be able to use the Virtual Campus, the Internet, word-processors and other office tools for individual and group assignments.
To become familiar with academic oral genres and their linguistic and discourse analysis.
To be able to identify key ideas, and to summarize, decode, and evaluate oral texts, so as to develop critical thinking skills.
To use bibliographical references, dictionaries and other on-line materials to contrast with previous knowledge and to learn autonomously.
To learn how to recognize, paraphrase and cite the works of others.
To use the techniques of discourse analysis to organize and elaborate oral presentations for specific registers and topics.
To work collaboratively in pairs and groups to reach a common goal (e.g., written or oral presentation, a debate, an interview), and to practice leading a group.
To learn how to present, edit and correct one's own work and that of others, appropriately.
To use academic English as a tool for communication, for example, in the presentation of projects or topics
To develop students' communicative competence and skills to the C1.2 level of English according to the Common European Framework Reference of Languages (CEFR).
To practice using and understanding the distinct varieties of English in specific social and academic contexts.
To take note of pronunciation, intonation, tone and other paralinguistic and extralinguistic aspects (i. e., multimodality) to arrive at mutual understanding between interlocutors and to be able to communicate successfully.
To learn how to teach what is learned by making use of verbal and non-verbal language, and strategies for interaction.
To reflect on the components of oral discourse so as to improve communication
To learn to be creative and interactive in oral communication.
