Competencies and objectives

Course context for academic year 2018-19

The subject "Academic English I" has as a main objective that the students will acquire the level C1 in all the skills, especially in writing and reading in the academic field. There will be an emphasis on the linguistic and communicative correction of the written language and in the revision of contents learned in previous English Language subjects, such as Lengua Inglesa V. Besides, there will be a specific treatment of the typical common errors of syntactic, grammatical and/or pragmatic character through exercises of correction and the reasoned explanation of the problematic points. The practical sessions will focus on the application of the analysis of discourse methodology in dealing with academic texts related to the degree of English Studies and to the academic and/or professional future of a graduate. From a theoretical point of view, the student will be introduced to the study of Academic English as a discipline, and to its main researchers, concepts, and methods of analysis.
