Competencies and objectives

 

Course context for academic year 2020-21

The main objective of the course is to prepare students to work in consultancy contexts, companies and institutions in the English language related to the world of business and leisure tourism.
Specific objectives:
- to know the importance and the role that language fulfils in the articulation of effective communication within the tourist company.
- to analyze the different contextual and situational factors that determine each context of use of English (written or spoken) in the tourist business.
- to learn strategies and techniques for the organization and presentation of information, specifically in English.
- to learn strategies and techniques for negotiation and business communication (between companies and customers), specifically in English.
- to know strategies for marketing and promotion of tourism products, specifically in English.
- to introduce students to the discipline of Tourism: especially in the structure, planning and development of the tourism industry.
- to introduce students to research techniques in specific languages, in this case, in the role of the English language in the world of tourism business.

Specific Competences (CE)

  • CE11 : Use the perspectives, theories and analysis techniques that are essential for constructing the theoretical framework of Forensic Linguistics.
  • CE17 : Be able to elucidate the linguistic nature that distinguishes the varieties of IFE: the terminology, syntax, rhetorical organisation and communicative strategies.
  • CE18 : Be able to control the idiosyncratic subtleties and cultural/social differences that are essential for interpersonal relationships in academic and professional contexts (cultural values, norms of courtesy, non-verbal communication, etc.).
  • CE19 : Be able to use the communicative and discursive techniques common to most of the discourses of the speciality, which serve to achieve different communicative purposes (argument techniques, presentation description, narrative, explanation, etc.).
  • CE2 : Apply the theories, models and linguistic tools that are relevant for study and research of the IFE.
  • CE20 : Be able to use resources for the transmission of scientific knowledge to present the research carried out in the context of the languages of the speciality.
  • CE22 : Be able to prepare effective texts in the different languages of the speciality, oral and written, in English and Spanish, according to the contextual and discursive needs and expectations.
  • CE25 : Ability to use existing resources to obtain, handle, interpret, manage and transmit information: databases, written and oral corpora, Internet and the ICTs.
  • CE32 : Ability to handle and assess the value of documentary resources that allow one to approach the understanding, production or translation of specialised texts correctly, from English to Spanish and vice versa.
  • CE33 : Ability to give an academic presentation orally in English and Spanish in academic and research contexts.
  • CE36 : Ability to apply linguistic knowledge to researching some aspect related to the languages of the speciality (English and Spanish).
  • CE4 : Master the specific terminology of different kinds of the IFE in the contexts where they are used.
  • CE6 : Be able to analyse the communicative genres of the different varieties of IFE.
  • CE9 : Be able to transmit the techniques of Plain English and its application to legal English.

 

 

 

Learning outcomes (Training objectives)

  • Identificar y explicar con precisión términos clave y conceptos utilizados en el sector turístico en inglés, demostrando un entendimiento profundo de su significado y aplicación en contextos profesionales.
  • Ser capaz de utilizar eficazmente recursos terminológicos especializados, tanto impresos como digitales, para comprender y traducir terminología específica del turismo en inglés.
  • Clasificar y describir los diferentes géneros textuales utilizados en el turismo, analizando sus características y propósitos comunicativos en inglés.
  • Desarrollar habilidades comunicativas y terminológicas esenciales en inglés, requeridas para una efectiva interacción profesional en el sector turístico.

 

 

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2020-21

- To deepen the knowledge of the different terminology of tourism with special emphasis on new areas such as nature tourism or responsible tourism.

- to know the terminology resources available in the translation of all types of tourism texts, both in print and electronic formats and its usefulness in research (distribution lists, discussion groups, etc.).

- to apply this knowledge to a specific field chosen by the student: information brochures that describe a nature reserve (nature reserve) or cities of historical value (historic cities), scientific texts on various topics (human resources training in the tourist industry) .

- to train students to translate specific texts in the world of tourism and to make a reasoned analysis and commentary of the difficulties that have been encountered in the task of translation.

- provide students with the basic communication and terminological skills in order to gain access to employment in the tourist industry.

- possessing a gender, inclusive language perspective, regarding language use in English and in contrast with Spanish
