Competencies and objectives

Course context for academic year 2021-22

Business Intelligence (BI) Applications allow us to improve the effectiveness of the decision making process in the company. In order to make use of these applications/tools, it is necessary to collect detailed and clear information about the operations and the activities or processes of the company itself for its subsequent analysis. This information is stored in a database in an integrated and unified manner. This repository of data is commonly known as the Data Warehouse (DA). The implementation of an AD is a costly task that requires following a systematic and a methodological process. This process includes specialized techniques for the design of the repository, for the modeling and processing of the information that will be stored in the DA, and for its later exploitation. Therefore, the success in this area for IT professionals directly depends on their ability not only to design the DA repository but also to identify, collect, and present the information about the company's processes in an accessible manner for non-expert users in Information Tecnology (IT). Furthermore, for some years now, Business Intelligence Applications have faced new challenges derived from the increase in size and typology of new data sources, such as data from sensors, mobile devices, virtual assistants, wearables, Open Data or Big Data. Therefore, all these new challenges will be studied in this course.
