Competencies and objectives

Course context for academic year 2021-22

Physics for Civil Engineering is a basic subject in the degree in Civil Engineering. The engineering graduate should be able to use the relevant laws of kinematics and dynamics to solve problems of rotational and lateral movement, explain harmonic oscillations, damped oscillations and forced oscillations and treat such oscillations mathematically, describes mathematically and explain the concept of wave lore, explain the first and second law of thermodynamics and solve problems applying these laws, and explain the principles of electric and magnetic fields and apply the basic laws of electric circuits. What we do is show problematic situations (open problems relevant to the civil engineering student) where we have to think about possible solutions doing research, and not necessarily requiring a numerical answer. This methodology facilitates the autonomy and responsibility of the students, the interactivity teacher-student and student-student, and shows the connection between physics and other areas of knowledge.

Course content (verified by ANECA in official undergraduate and Master’s degrees)

General Competences (CG)

  • CG-4 : Understand and master the basic concepts of the general laws of mechanics, thermodynamics, fields and waves and electromagnetism and their application in solving engineering problems.

UA Basic Transversal Competences

  • CT-11 : Capacity to learn and apply new concepts and methods in an autonomous and interdisciplinary fashion.
  • CT-12 : Capacity to assimilate and adapt to the permanent evolution of technology when developing one's professional career.

  • CT-7 : Capacity for oral and written exposition.
  • CT-8 : Capacity to plan tasks and commit oneself to satisfying goals and deadlines.
  • CT-9 : Capacity for group work.

Basic Transversal Competences

  • CB-1 : Students should show they possess and understand knowledge in a field of study that continues from general secondary education and is usually found at a level which, although supported by advanced textbooks, also includes certain aspects that involve knowledge arising from the cutting edge of their field of study.
  • CB-2 : Students should know how to apply their knowledge to their job or vocation in a professional manner and should have those skills that are usually reflected when preparing and defending arguments and solving problems in their field of study.
  • CB-3 : Students should have the ability to gather and interpret relevant data (normally within their field of study) to give opinions that include a reflection on important, social, scientific, ethical matters, etc.
  • CB-4 : Students should be able to transmit information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • CB-5 : Students should have developed the necessary learning skills to undertake later studies with a high level of autonomy.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2021-22

OBJECTIVES.

Scientific-technical capacities necessary for professional practice in civil engineering as well as a number of other fields, such as consulting, analysis, planning, design, calculation, project, leadership, building, management, maintenance, conservation and exploitation.

SUBJECT OBJECTIVES/COMPETENCES.

To acquire and apply physics and mathematical knowledge to solve Civil Engineering situations.
To achieve the basic knowledge of the Physic laws which are needed to understand other subjects study during the degree.
To give a simple description and as complete as possible for mechanics, oscillations and waves, thermodynamics and electric and magnetic fields; establishing the basic relationships that exist between these parts of Physics and other subjects in the curriculum.
To increase the capacity of planning and conducting experiments, as well as analysis and interpretation of experimental data.
To develop autonomy in the learning processes forming capacities and attitudes to facilitate life-long learning and capacities to communicate making use of the scientific language.
To acquire skills in information technologies.
