Course context for academic year 2019-20
This course gives students an overview of some of the central traditions in discourse studies, examining their theories, concepts and findings. As a result, students will be able to explore discourse in diverse communicative situations around them in an informed, reasoned and critical manner, and studiy phenomena of their own interest.

- To introduce students to the methods, terminology and main findings of discourse studies dealing with the various uses of language(s) in a variety of social contexts.
- To inculcate an appreciation of two basic dimensions of discourse: a) conveying content and describing a reality; b) performing social actions and constructing social reality and social structures.
- To guide students through selected readings on the subject, and prepare them to design small investigations.
