Course context for academic year 2019-20

Study of the English language with the aim of (i) developing the communicative competences that the European Framework of Reference (CEFR) in the English language proposes for the students in level C1.1 (ii) to strengthen the competences acquired in English Language I, II and III, and IV, as well as preparing the students to study the subjects English Language VI: Academic English I and English Language VII: Academic English II (iii) to deepen the linguistic analysis of oral and multimodal written texts in order to develop the critical ability and acquiring knowledge of English linguistics.

General Competences (CG)

  • CG1 : Capacity for analysis, synthesis and critical reasoning.
  • CG4 : Capacity for teamwork and leadership.
  • CG6 : Capacity to understand the role of language in the construction of human beings as active members of a linguistic and cultural community and relate this to the function of individuals in society.
  • CG7 : Theoretical and practical understanding and appreciation of diversity and multiculturalism both nationally and internationally.

 

Specific Competences (CE)

  • CE1 : Be able to master the English language in practice and in theory.
  • CE22 : Be able to write texts of different kinds.
  • CE23 : Be able to translate texts of different kinds.
  • CE5 : Be able to learn and use English grammar correctly.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2019-20

1. To use the Virtual Campus with all its utilities (materials, debates, links, MOODLE, etc.) as a virtual learning platform.

2. To use the Internet and Web 2.0 to share, create and search for information.

3. To use word processors and other office utilities in assigned individual or group tasks.

4. To know how to use the language laboratory and technological resources to improve learning.

5. To reflect on one's own learning in order to establish and recognize the weaknesses, threats, strengths and opportunities that arise.

6. To use bibliographical references and documentary resources to obtain information and be able to contrast it with previous knowledge.

7. To use the knowledge, materials and resources to be able to learn independently.

8. To work in pairs: to collaborate to achieve a common goal in a written work, an oral presentation, a debate or a conversation.

9. To lead a working group.

10. To learn to take care of the quality of the work (including the editing and correction of the own texts and the texts of their classmates).

11. To develop the communicative competences of the students in level C1.1 according to the European Common Frame of reference (CEFR) in English language.
12. To develop the 5 skills established in the CEFR following the C1.1 level.
13. To strengthen the knowledge acquired at the previous level (B2 of the CEFR).
14. To be able to communicate in common situations in English speaking countries, being able to adapt to the specific context and using language with flexibility and efficiency for social and professional purposes. To use the English language as an instrument of communication.
15. To develop professional skills in English: for example, presentation of a project, negotiation techniques, meetings, presentation of a theme, etc.
16. To know how to adapt the format and registration of a text or speech to the context.
17. To be aware of the cultural differences between the native culture and that of the English-speaking countries.
18. To know the customs of English-speaking countries through texts, opinion articles, TV programs, films, newspapers, etc.
19. To strengthen the knowledge acquired in previous subjects, focusing especially on the structure of complex sentences and subordination.
20. To establish differences and contrasts between the syntax of the mother tongue and the English language.

 21. To write extensive essays and texts related to the degree.
22. To know the conventions of the linguistic genres of the program and use the techniques of discourse analysis to learn how to structure and write extensive texts: for example letters, reports, proposals, essays, articles, etc.
23. To use translation as a tool for learning and contrasting languages.
