Course context for academic year 2019-20

The subject of Introduction to International Relations is a basic subject that is taught in the first semester of the first year of the Degree in International Relations. It is also in close connection with the compulsory subject of Public International Law, which is taught in the first quarter of the second year, and with the compulsory subject International Organizations, which is taught in the second semester of the second year, both by the Area of Public International Law and International Relations. Also, with the mandatory subject of Foreign Policy and Public Diplomacy of Spain, which is taught in the first four-month period of the fourth year, by the Area of ¿¿International Public Law and International Relations. It pursues as a formative purpose, the knowledge and analysis of the contemporary international society, based on the study of the actors of the international system, the structures and processes of the international system, the fractures of this and the main subjects of the current global agenda ( sustainable development, environment, globalization, international migration, security and defense, etc).
The knowledge acquired paves the way for research, professional practice, diplomatic career or access to various positions of public officials in the field of International Organizations, especially the United Nations, the European Union and the Council of Europe, for cite only a few, given the growing need for human resources in an increasingly globalized and interdependent world. This learning, in addition, acquires a strategic character if it is directed towards a greater later specialization, taking advantage of the new and the need for internationalization of firms, public bodies and organizations of any kind.

  • CE1 : Analizar la naturaleza y características de las relaciones entre los actores internacionales y particularmente entre los Estados.
  • CE13 : Conocer el papel que las empresas multinacionales desempeñan en las organizaciones internacionales y en las relaciones internacionales en general.
  • CE23 : Comprender el papel que desempeña la Unión Europea como actor global.
  • CE24 : Comprender el papel que desempeña España en la sociedad internacional.
  • CE3 : Diferenciar las distintas competencias y funciones del Estado, las organizaciones internacionales y los actores no estatales en el sistema internacional.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2019-20

1. To acquire basic knowledge with the support of up-to-date bibliography and documentation on International Relations, taking into account the latest trends in scientific and technological development.
2. To develop the capacity to make critical judgments on international reality.
3. To foster autonomous learning for future studies.
4. To develop the ability to carry out management and executive research in those fields where basic knowledge on International Relations is required. By way of example, the media, departments in transnational corporations, International Organizations and NGOs, public diplomacy bodies; all these require an analytical capacity and understanding of international reality from the professional.
