Course context for academic year 2021-22

Esta asignatura pertenece al Modulo Avanzado del Grado en Biología y se oferta en el séptimo semestre, correspondiente al cuarto curso de la Titulación, dentro del itinerario Biotecnología y Biosanitaria. Se trata de una materia optativa de 6 ECTS.

El uso de la tecnología de cultivo de células animales y vegetales se ha incrementado tanto en la investigación biomédica básica como en la industria biotecnológica desde finales del siglo pasado. En la investigación básica este incremento se debe entre otros al desarrollo de las tecnologías de producción de proteínas recombinantes y de anticuerpos monoclonales, la necesidad de modelos celulares en biología molecular y la creciente importancia de la biología celular. En la industria, el uso de tecnologías basadas en las células animales para la producción de biofármacos y vacunas ha experimentado una rápida expansión. Además, surge una demanda social y legal de reemplazar, reducir o refinar el uso de animales en la experimentación, lo cual ha conducido a un incremento en el desarrollo de modelos celulares eucariotas. En las dos últimas décadas, el estudio de las células troncales, así como sus aplicaciones en medicina regenerativa o como modelos de enfermedad, ha impulsado el desarrollo de estas técnicas. Así mismo, las técnicas de reproducción asistida han contribuido a aumentar el interés por su estudio, debido a la creciente necesidad de mejorar el cultivo de gametos y embriones.
El objetivo de esta asignatura es proporcionar una formación básica, tanto teórica como práctica, en tecnologías de cultivos celulares animales y vegetales, y una primera aproximación a sus aplicaciones en la investigación biomédica y la industria biotecnológica. El cultivo de células vegetales tiene también importancia biotecnológica. Sin embargo, la mayoría de las aplicaciones tienen más que ver con la regeneración de nuevas variedades de plantas, transgénicas o no, que con el cultivo de las células en sí. En la presente asignatura estudiaremos las técnicas de cultivo en suspensión de células vegetales y sus aplicaciones biotecnológicas.
