Course context for academic year 2018-19

Histology is a scientific discipline necessary to understand the main biological processes, and which is basic for the training and future career of biologists. It provides them with the fundamental knowledge on the complexity of cells, tissues and organs in organisms, at a microscopic level. It is also an essential subject to better know alls levels of complexity, from basic (atomic, molecular and cellular) to greater levels (of organs and organism systems) taught in other courses (Physiology, Biopathology, Botany, Zoology, etc.).

Professional profile background: Histology provides biologists with the essential knowledge for the development of virtually all career paths for a Biologist (sanitary, environmental, biotechnology, etc.) included in the White Book of the studies of Biology (http://www.aneca.es/var/media/150328/libroblanco_biologia_def.pdf ).

Academic profile background: In an academic context, Histology is an essential course as it is one of the basic subjects of modern Biology. The reason for this is that the cells and tissues are the basic units of all living organisms, which are the aim of the study of Biology.   • CE18 : Analyse the structure and functions of animal and plant viruses, cells, tissues, organs and systems.
  • CE19 : Study animal and plant anatomy and morphology.
  • CE20 : Understand the basic principles of immunity in living beings.
  • CE22 : Analyse and interpret the development, growth and biological cycles of living beings.
  • CE4 : Recognise different levels of organisation in living systems.
  • CE5 : Understand the concept of life and know its origin and history, together with that of the Earth.
  • CE7 : Understand evolutionary mechanisms and models.
  • CE8 : Understand and know the genetic foundations of diversity.
  • CE9 : Identify organisms and interpret the diversity of species in the environment, as well as their origin, evolution and behaviour.

  • CE32 : Safe handling: biological material, reagents, instruments and devices used in Biology.
  • CE33 : Carry out standard laboratory procedures involved in analytical tasks.
  • CE35 : Interpret data gathered from observation and measurement in the laboratory and the field.
  • CE36 : Prepare, present and defend scientific and technical reports both in writing and orally to an audience.
  • CE37 : Ability to find, analyse, understand and write scientific and technical texts.
  • CE38 : Use inductive and deductive methods correctly in the field of Biology.
  • CE39 : Recognise and evaluate biological processes in daily life.
