Course context for academic year 2018-19

Esta asignatura se ubica en el módulo Fundamental y dentro de él en la materia "Geometría Diferencial". Dicha materia incluye además la asignatura: "Curvas y superficies".
Como todas las asignaturas de Geometría, el objetivo último consiste en desarrollar la visión espacial del estudiante y su capacidad de relacionar las formas de los objetos con su descripción analítica. La asignatura pretende introducir los conceptos necesarios para saltar de la "geometría local" desarrollada en la asignatura "Curvas y superficies" a la "geometría global", en la que influye de manera importante la Topología.
Siempre que se abordan problemas globales en geometría se impone sobre los objetos en cuestión alguna condición de "totalidad" que evite que aparezcan como soluciones "trozos" de superficies más grandes. Una de esas condiciones es claramente la compacidad, que se debilita frecuentemente a la de completitud geodésica; cuando se considere el punto de vista extrínseco, se puede sustituir esta última condición por la algo más fuerte de ser un subconjunto cerrado de R3. Estas restricciones posibilitan utilizar la herramienta analítica de la integración de modo eficaz.
La asignatura se divide en dos bloques: en el primero de ellos se hará un estudio intrínseco de las superficies sin referencias al espacio ambiente; en el segundo se hará un estudio extrínseco en el que se relacionará la geometría de la superficie con la de su espacio ambiente R3.
