Course context for academic year 2018-19

Marine Biotechnology will join other topics to ensure the acquisition by students of basic skills in degree of Marine Sciences. This topic/course is a basic training for graduates in Marine Sciences on the application of biotechnological tools for the analysis and management of the marine and coastal environments and for the development and practical use of the organisms from such environments

DURING THIS ACADEMIC COURSE 25% OF MARINE BIOTECHNOLOGY TEHORY WILL BE TAUGHT IN ENGLISH, TO HELP STUDENTS MEET THEIR LANGUAGE KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENT

Specific Competences:>>Theoretical

  • CE1 : Possess a basic understanding of molecular structure, genetics, cell organisation and the evolutionary processes of living beings.
  • CE15 : Understand the basic techniques of the market economy applied to marine resources
  • CE6 : Know and understand the essential facts, concepts, principles and theories related to marine sciences and their relationship with other sciences.
  • CE7 : Understand the structural and functional organisation of marine organisms and their biological diversity.
  • CE8 : Understand the basic principles of ecology, the structure and function of ecosystems, developing it for the marine and coastal environment.

 

Specific Competences:>>Ability

  • CE21 : Use the necessary information and documentation for the separation, identification and cataloguing of marine organisms.
  • CE24 : Capacity to recognise, evaluate and manage marine resources of different types.
  • CE29 : Understand the working of companies associated with the marine environment, recognise specific problems and propose solutions.
  • CE36 : Ability for professional interaction with social segments, whose perceptions can be incorporated to improve the studies and/or activities to be carried out.

- To Know and to understand the essential facts and concepts related to marine biotechnology.

- To Know the marine organisms of interest in biotechnology, their basic functions and role in the ecosystem.

- To Acquire the ability to analyze and determine those marine organisms that may be useful in biotechnology.

- To Know and to apply biotechnology methodologies to the marine environment.

- To Acquire knowledge on the marine biotech companies and the legal aspects of marine biotech.
