OBJECTIVES


The aim of the Master’s degree in Public Health is to train professionals, within a multidisciplinary framework, and prepare them to solve Public Health problems in different action areas. The degree will facilitate both professional development as well as the introduction to research tasks. Students are expected to:

  • Understand, interpret, analyse and explain the phenomena of health and community welfare in modern societies.

  • Be able to address health problems and their determinants from a population perspective.

  • Acquire training and skills to develop programmes, as well as prevention and promotion activities through collective action, and the provision of services that protect and promote health.

  • Incorporate knowledge and experience in the field of public health research.

  • Develop attitudes and skills that enable students to work in multidisciplinary teams.

GENERAL COURSE PROGRAMME

The joint Public Health Master's Degree programme is divided into two Subject Area Modules and a Master’s Degree Final Project (please see attached table). The first MODULE OF COMPULSORY SUBJECTS amounts to 30 ECTS, and is composed of five subjects. The second MODULE OF OPTIONAL SUBJECTS amounts to 18 ECTS credits, and the MASTER’S DEGREE FINAL PROJECT amounts to 12 ECTS credits. Each subject amounts to 6 ECTS. Students must successfully complete the 5 compulsory subjects (30 ECTS), 3 of the optional subjects amounting to 18 ECTS credits, and their Master’s Degree Final Project to meet the requirement of successful completion of 60 credits for the Master’s Degree.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS


 

According to the Regulations of the University of Alicante, the following requirements must be complied to have access to official taught Master’s degrees:

  1. To be in possession of a SPANISH OFFICIAL GRADUATE DEGREE CERTIFICATE or other issued by an institution of higher education  within the EHEA (European Higher Education) that enables the holder to have access  to Master’s degrees in the issuing.
  2. To be in possession of an officially approved  FOREIGN HIGHER EDUCATION DEGREE CERTIFICATE that had been recognised as equal to the degree that allows access to the requested studies.
  3. To be in possession of a UNIVERSITY DEGREE CERTIFICATE obtained in a University or Higher Education Institution of COUNTRIES OUTSIDE THE EHEA, without the prior approval of their studies. In this case, the following should be considered:

  • Non- recognised degree certificates shall require a technical report showing an equivalence statement issued by the University of Alicante (ContinUA – Continuing Education Centre), for which the corresponding fee should be paid.
  • Access through this way does under no circumstances imply prior official approval of the holder’s degree certificate, nor its recognition for purposes other than studying a master's degree.

 

ADMISSION AND ASSESSMENT CRITERIA


Degree and diploma holders in the following areas related to health sciences will have the logical profiles for the Master’s Degree:  (Medicine, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Nutrition, Food Science and Technology, Podology, Labour Relations, Occupational Therapy). However, the following degree holders will also be considered appropriate for admission: Statistics, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Economics, Engineering, Law, Education and Teaching, Journalism.

Most appropriate prior education:

- Minimum knowledge of statistics and epidemiology - a recommended requirement.

- Basic knowledge of English

The selection of Master’s degree students will be in accordance with the candidate’s curriculum vitae as well as the results obtained for their degrees. A minimum number of places will be reserved for Resident physicians in Preventive Medicine and Public Health from the Region of Valencia who wish to study for a Master’s Degree in Public Health at the UMH and UA and avoid relocation to other universities in Spain, given that this qualification   is a necessary requirement for their MIR training.

Following publication of the definitive list of those admitted to the course, applicants will receive an email containing a password which will serve as a User ID, enabling them to enrol via the Campus Virtual in accordance with the deadlines and conditions established annually.
