Course context for academic year 2020-21

This subject is fundamentally about sound design and its realization by means of digital sound synthesis systems. This approach is general and can be applied in principle to any kind of sound, but this subject deals with the study of sound so relevant and so important in our environment economically as it is the music. Sound synthesis has many applications such as the sound of video, film, or video games and any sound is likely to be created, but the truth is that the vast majority of the sound that is synthesized is music.

In this context, this course studies the perception of music and, therefore, the sound design specifications that acoustically cause these sensations. However, the main part of the course is to give a broad view of the catalog of techniques of synthesis most used, with its advantages and disadvantages, and their main applications. Also included are techniques followed by the design of traditional instruments, which will serve as a guide and reference to design synthetic instruments.

The theory is complemented by laboratory practices that will be carried out individual work related to the design and control of digital synthesis using a language of specification creation and sound processing systems.

This subject is related to previous ones, which include acoustics, electroacoustics, Digital signal processing, Digital audio processing and digital image processing.

  • B2 : Basic understanding of using and programming computers, operating systems, databases and computer programs for use in engineering.

 

Basic Transversal Competences

  • CT1 : Students should show they possess and understand knowledge in a field of study that continues from general secondary education and is usually found at a level which, although supported by advanced textbooks, also includes certain aspects that involve knowledge arising from the cutting edge of their field of study.
  • CT2 : Students should know how to apply their knowledge to their job or vocation in a professional manner and should possess those skills that are usually reflected when preparing and defending arguments and solving problems in their field of study.
  • CT3 : Students should have the ability to gather and interpret relevant data (normally within their field of study) to give opinions that include a reflection on important, social, scientific, ethical matters, etc.
  • CT4 : Students should be able to transmit information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • CT5 : Students should have developed the necessary learning skills to take on later studies with a high level of autonomy.

  • C2 : Capacity to use computer and information applications, office systems, databases, advanced calculation, project management, visualisation, etc.) to support the development and exploitation of telecommunications and electronics networks, services and applications.

 

Specific Competences: >> Competences Specific to Sound and Image

  • E1 : Capacity to construct, exploit and manage telecommunications services and applications, understanding these to be systems for the acquisition, analogue and digital treatment, coding, transport, representation, processing, storage, reproduction, management and presentation of audiovisual services and multimedia information.
  • E5 : Capacity to create, code, manage, broadcast and distribute multimedia content, taking into account criteria of usability and accessibility to audiovisual, broadcasting and interactive services.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2020-21

  • Know the relationship between the features objective perceptual of sounds and the magnitudes that originate them, so that students can both describe how to specify the sounds in terms of these characteristics.
  • Understand how traditional instruments generate sound, the fundamentals of its acoustics and its control.
  • Understanding the advantages and disadvantages of each technique and its applicability to know involved in digital sound synthesis, computer methods and technologies.
  • Know the standards computerized control of musical devices.
  • Understand the rudiments of classical and computer musical representations, to be able to work in cooperation with musicians and sonorizadores in the field of design and production of sound in any creative environment.
